Global Climate Change is Real
Ninety-seven percent of climate scientists agree that climate-warming trends over the past century are very likely due to human activities, and most of the leading scientific organizations worldwide have issued public statements endorsing this position. This is evident in global temperature increases, warming oceans, shrinking ice sheets, glacial retreat, decreased snow cover, sea level ruse, declining Arctic sea ice levels, changing Arctic carbon cycles, extreme weather events and ocean acidification. Our "Carbon Neutral" Sustainable Shipping
To do our part to fight climate change, we're proud to introduce Carbon Neutral Shipping.
The goal of our carbon-neutral shipping program isn't to eliminate all carbon emissions associated with shipping. That's a practical impossibility. Instead, our objective is to offset our emissions associated with our shipping by removing an equal amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.
At Avocado, we offset our calculated emissions for our entire Los Angeles factory (175,000+ sq. ft.) — as well as the total estimated number of national product shipments over a 12 month period — by supporting Carbonfund.org's offset restoration projects, specifically targeting reforestation and forest preservation initiatives.
Why We're Focusing on Reforestation and Forest Preservation
Forest-based carbon offset projects fight climate change by sequestering carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere in trees and soil and have many co-benefits for the community and local wildlife. Forest preservation creates jobs, maintains and expands wildlife habitats, protects biodiversity, and improves local environmental quality.
The fact is: much of the world’s tropical rainforests have either been cut down or are directly threatened with imminent deforestation. Deforestation and forest degradation have resulted in species loss and direct contribution to global warming. Moreover, deforestation accounts for over 20 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions — more than the entire global transportation sector.
We're hoping our effort to fund conservation projects will make an impact. At the same time, we're also working to analyze our full lifecycle impact, and decrease our environmental impact in other innovative ways. And we invite you (and other businesses) to join us!
