Yes. Avocado sells Green Pillow Refill Bags in two sizes — ½ pound and 1 pound — made from the same GOLS-certified organic latex shreds and GOTS-certified organic kapok fiber used in our finished pillows. Refills let you customize firmness, restore loft over time, and extend your pillow's life rather than replace it.
How refills work
Every Avocado Green Pillow and Mini Pillow includes a zipper that lets you add or remove fill to dial in your preferred firmness and loft. Our pillows ship generously stuffed at a medium-plush feel. If you prefer firmer support, more loft, or want to restore a pillow that has compressed over time, adding a refill bag takes a few minutes.
One ½-pound fill bag is included with every Green Pillow purchase. Additional refills are available separately.
Choosing the right size
Refill size | Best for |
½ pound | Adding volume or firmness to one pillow; fine-tuning an existing fill level |
1 pound | Restoring significant loft, generally enough to refresh two pillows |
For reference: our standard pillow uses 3 pounds of fill, the queen 4 pounds, and the king 5 pounds.
What the fill is made of
Most pillow refills on the market are polyester fiberfill or synthetic down — petroleum-derived materials with no independent health or safety certification. Avocado refill bags contain the same two materials used in our finished pillows:
GOLS-certified organic latex shreds — upcycled from our Los Angeles manufacturing facility, diverting latex trim from landfill. GOLS certifies organic sourcing and processing from the plantation through the finished material.
GOTS-certified organic kapok fiber — a plant-based fiber harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree, naturally lightweight and breathable.
Both materials meet the same certification standards as the finished pillow — the same organic inputs, the same independent verification.
Why refills matter
A pillow that can be adjusted and restored doesn't need to be replaced as often. That's a real reduction in resource demand — fewer pillows manufactured, shipped, and eventually discarded. Our refill bags ship in a reusable bag and are made from upcycled latex trim generated during mattress and pillow production at our Fullerton, California facility, turning manufacturing scrap into usable fill rather than waste.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a refill to make my pillow softer instead of firmer?
Yes — the zipper also lets you remove the fill. If your pillow feels too firm, unzip it and take some out before adding more. Start with small adjustments and sleep on it for a night before making further changes.
How do I know when my pillow needs a refill?
If your pillow has noticeably lost loft, no longer provides adequate head and neck support, or feels flatter than when you first received it, a pillow refill will restore it. Organic latex and kapok do compress gradually with use — this is normal and does not indicate a defect.
Do the refills carry the same certifications as the finished pillow?
The fill materials — GOLS-certified organic latex and GOTS-certified organic kapok — are the same materials used in our certified finished pillows. No synthetic fill. No polyester. No petroleum-derived materials.
Are refills available for all Avocado pillows?
Refills are compatible with the Green Pillow and Mini Pillow. They are not applicable to our latex slab pillows, which use a solid latex core rather than shredded fill.
Where are refills made?
Refill bags are made in Los Angeles from upcycled latex shreds generated during production at our Fullerton manufacturing facility.
