No. Lanolin is removed from Avocado's organic wool during scouring — the cleaning process that takes place at our co-owned GOTS-certified processing facility in northern India before the fiber is carded, combed, and incorporated into our mattresses.
What is Lanolin?
Lanolin is the natural waxy substance secreted by sheep's sebaceous glands that coats the fiber and helps protect the animal's skin and fleece from moisture. It is present in raw, unprocessed wool and is removed during commercial scouring. While lanolin has a long history of use in cosmetics and skin care products, some people are sensitive or allergic to it, and its presence as a residue in a finished textile is a reasonable concern for those who are.
How is Lanolin Removed?
Our wool is scoured using water and a gentle GOTS-approved soap — no acid washes, no chlorine-based treatments. The scouring process removes lanolin along with vegetable matter and other raw-fleece residue. For more details on the washing and processing steps, see How Do You Wash Your Raw Wool?
Independent Verification
The finished Avocado mattress is certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I (certificate 24.HUS.86422) — the highest OEKO-TEX category, designed for products used by babies and toddlers — which tests the finished product against human-ecological criteria for harmful and residual substances. This provides an additional, independent layer of verification beyond the processing controls themselves.
A Note on Alpaca
Select Avocado comfort layers include Peruvian alpaca fiber. Alpaca does not contain lanolin — it produces a different fiber protein that is naturally free of the waxy coating found in sheep's wool. For customers with known lanolin sensitivity, this is worth noting when comparing mattress models.
For customers who prefer to avoid animal-derived materials entirely, our Vegan Mattress contains no wool, alpaca, or other animal products and is Certified Vegan by Vegan Action and PETA-approved.
