Yes, we can make a mattress that meets federal open flame requirements without using nasty chemical fire retardants, which have known toxicity and health risks. Many naturally occurring products are flame retardants. Our Green, Latex, and Luxury Plush Mattresses use GOTS-certified organic wool to meet federal standards for flammability. Our Vegan Mattress uses graphite powder, and our Vegan Latex Mattress uses natural hydrated silica.

Green, Latex, and Luxury Plush Mattress Use Wool

We use 100% GOTS organic certified and STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX® wool in our Avocado Green Mattress. Wool’s inherent chemical structure makes it naturally flame resistant. Wool is harder to ignite than many common textile fibers. While cotton catches alight at 255°C, the temperature must reach 570-600°C before wool will ignite. We do not use flame-retardant chemicals, chemical dips, or fire socks.

Vegan Mattress Uses Graphite Instead of Wool

In place of wool, we add natural graphite powder to the latex of our Vegan Mattress and Vegan Latex Mattress. The graphite acts as a naturally-derived fire retardant barrier and exceeds all U.S. standards for flammability. Graphite powder is commonly called expandable graphite. When it comes into contact with fire, the graphite expands super fast and absorbs the oxygen. Of course, for anything to burn, you need oxygen. So this process prevents burning, and it does not release any toxins, either.

Vegan Latex Mattress Uses Hydrated Silica Instead of Wool

Hydrated silica is naturally derived from silica (silicon dioxide), an abundant compound that forms about 12 percent of the earth's surface. Hydrated silica has a long history of safe use in food products. It is a natural, vegan, and non-toxic flame retardant in our Vegan Latex Mattress.
