Do Your Mattresses Emit a Gas or Chemical Odor?

Avocado mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold certified for VOC emissions within safe limits for bedrooms and children's rooms, and UL Formaldehyde-Free verified. A faint natural odor on delivery is normal and dissipates quickly.

Avocado mattresses are independently certified for VOC emissions within safe limits for bedrooms and children's rooms under GREENGUARD Gold — and independently verified to contain no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors under UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification. They contain no polyurethane foam, memory foam, chemical flame retardants, or chemical adhesives between comfort layers — the primary sources of chemical off-gassing in conventional mattresses.

Why VOC Emissions Matter

VOC concentrations at a mattress surface can be approximately twice as high as in the surrounding room air, and body heat increases emissions further — meaning the air directly above a mattress, where you breathe all night, carries a higher concentration of whatever the mattress emits than the ambient room air suggests. For infants sleeping face down, exposure is concentrated at the point of highest emission for the longest duration during the developmental window of greatest vulnerability.

This is why GREENGUARD Gold certification — which sets chemical emission limits specifically for bedrooms and children's rooms — is the relevant standard, not general air quality testing. Every Avocado mattress, including our crib mattress, is certified.

What Is and Isn't in an Avocado Mattress

The materials that drive VOC emissions in conventional mattresses are the same materials Avocado does not use:

  • No polyurethane foam — replaced entirely with GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex

  • No memory foam — a polyurethane derivative with similar off-gassing characteristics

  • No chemical flame retardants — replaced with certified organic wool or natural mineral alternatives

  • No chemical adhesives between comfort layers — layers are secured by hand needle-tufting

In their place: GOLS-certified organic latex, GOTS-certified organic wool, and GOTS-certified organic cotton — all certified to OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I and independently screened under MADE SAFE® and EWG Verified® against thousands of known and suspected harmful substances.

What to Expect When Your Mattress Arrives

In particularly humid climates, you may notice a very faint natural odor when your mattress is first unboxed. This is a characteristic of natural organic materials — not a chemical smell — and dissipates quickly as the mattress airs out. It is not associated with VOC off-gassing of the kind found in synthetic foam mattresses. We recommend unboxing in a well-ventilated room and allowing the mattress to expand and air for a few hours before sleeping on it.
