Why Crib Mattress Certifications Matter

A crib mattress is one of the few products an infant is in contact with for 12+ hours a day, often for the first two to three years of life. Because babies have a higher respiratory rate, less developed detoxification systems, and a higher body-surface-to-weight ratio than adults, the standards applied to crib mattresses are particularly relevant.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I is OEKO-TEX's most restrictive tier, designed specifically for products that are in direct contact with the skin of babies and toddlers. It tests against thresholds for formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other regulated substances at significantly lower limits than the broader Class II–IV ratings.

MADE SAFE® screens against thousands of substances known or suspected to harm human health, aquatic life, and wildlife. EWG Verified® requires full ingredient transparency and screens against EWG's health-based criteria. GREENGUARD Gold certifies against indoor air quality emission limits. UL® Formaldehyde-Free independently verifies the absence of added formaldehyde.

Both Avocado crib mattresses carry all five certifications at the finished-product level. The Emily Organic Crib Mattress holds finished-product GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold per public records; the additional certifications above are not publicly listed at the finished-product level.

Choosing Between Avocado's Two Crib Mattresses

Both Avocado crib mattresses hold the same finished-product certification stack and the same GOTS license (CU863637). The choice is about construction:

The Avocado Eco Organic Crib Mattress is a dual-firm innerspring crib mattress with 276 individually wrapped coils, designed to provide responsive support across the crib surface. It's Avocado's most affordable certified-organic crib mattress.

The Avocado Organic Crib Mattress is a spring-free, all-natural construction built around GOLS-certified organic latex, organic wool, and organic cotton — with no metal coils. For families seeking an all-natural composition without springs, this is Avocado's flagship crib mattress.

PFAS Testing

Avocado screens for 679 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity across core materials and waterproof protectors — including the waterproof surfaces used on crib mattresses. No detectable amounts have been found. Full results — substance list, methodology, and findings — are published publicly in our Help Center.

My Green Mattress has not published comparable PFAS test results for the Emily Organic Crib Mattress.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all three crib mattresses GOTS certified?

Yes. The Avocado Eco Organic Crib Mattress, the Avocado Organic Crib Mattress, and the My Green Mattress Emily Organic Crib Mattress all hold finished-product GOTS certification per the public GOTS database.

If all three are GOTS certified, what's the actual difference?

Beyond GOTS, the Avocado crib mattresses also hold finished-product certifications — OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free — that the Emily Organic Crib Mattress does not publicly list. Avocado also publishes PFAS test results across 679 substances. And the Avocado Eco Organic Crib Mattress uses individually wrapped coils (rather than continuous-wire springs) for innerspring support.

What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I?

Class I is OEKO-TEX's most restrictive certification tier, designed specifically for textile products in direct skin contact with babies and toddlers (up to age 3). It applies the strictest thresholds across the OEKO-TEX testing program. Both Avocado crib mattresses hold Class I certification at the finished-product level.

What is EWG Verified® and why does it matter for a crib mattress?

EWG Verified® is an independent standard from the Environmental Working Group that requires full public ingredient disclosure and screens the finished mattress against EWG's health-based criteria — including prohibitions on chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, PFAS, and PVC. Both Avocado crib mattresses are EWG Verified®. For a full explanation, see What EWG Verified Means on a Mattress.

Do Avocado crib mattresses contain fiberglass?

No. Avocado mattresses do not contain fiberglass. Organic wool serves as the natural flame barrier, meeting federal flammability standards without chemical flame retardants or fiberglass.

Can I verify Avocado's GOTS certification?

Yes. Avocado's GOTS license (CU863637) is publicly searchable in the GOTS certification database at global-standard.org.
