Why Certifications Matter for a Kids' Mattress

A kids' mattress is a long-duration contact surface during years when children are growing rapidly and are more sensitive to environmental exposures than adults. The standards applied to kids' mattresses are particularly relevant.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I is OEKO-TEX's most restrictive certification tier, designed specifically for textile products in direct skin contact with babies and toddlers (up to age 3). The Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress is certified to Class I at the finished-product level.

MADE SAFE® screens against thousands of substances known or suspected to harm human health, aquatic life, and wildlife. EWG Verified® requires full ingredient transparency and screens against EWG's health-based criteria — including prohibitions on chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, PFAS, and PVC. UL® Formaldehyde-Free independently verifies the absence of added formaldehyde.

The Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress holds all four certifications at the finished-product level. The Kiwi Mattress holds finished-product GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold per public records.

PFAS Testing

Avocado screens for 679 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity across core materials and waterproof protectors. No detectable amounts have been found. Full results — substance list, methodology, and findings — are published publicly in our Help Center.

My Green Mattress has not published comparable PFAS test results for the Kiwi.

Brand-Level Sustainability Programs

Avocado holds B Corp certification (since May 2020), 1% for the Planet membership, Climate Label Certification, and an 88% landfill diversion rate (UL 2799 validated). Avocado has published a 48% absolute reduction in Scope 1+2+3 emissions since 2021. My Green Mattress is a 1% for the Planet member but has not published comparable brand-level sustainability program credentials.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kiwi Mattress GOTS certified?

Yes, per public records. Both the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress (license CU863637) and the Kiwi Mattress hold finished-product GOTS certification.

If both are GOTS certified, what's the actual difference?

Beyond GOTS, the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress additionally holds finished-product certifications — OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free — that the Kiwi Mattress does not list publicly. Avocado also publishes PFAS test results across 679 substances and uses 2" of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex (compared to ~1.25" in the Kiwi).

What is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I?

Class I is OEKO-TEX's most restrictive certification tier, designed specifically for textile products in direct skin contact with babies and toddlers (up to age 3). The Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress holds Class I certification at the finished-product level.

What is EWG Verified® and why does it matter?

EWG Verified® is an independent standard from the Environmental Working Group that requires full public ingredient disclosure and screens the finished mattress against EWG's health-based criteria — including prohibitions on chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, PFAS, and PVC. The Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress is EWG Verified®; the Kiwi is not. For a full explanation, see What EWG Verified Means on a Mattress.

Is the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress suitable for bunk beds?

The Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress has a 7.5" profile. Bunk bed manufacturers typically specify a maximum mattress thickness so that the guardrail still provides adequate clearance above the sleep surface — common guidance is no more than 6"–8", depending on the bed. Always check the specific guardrail height and mattress thickness recommendations from the bunk bed manufacturer.

Does the Avocado Eco Organic Kids Mattress contain fiberglass?

No. Avocado mattresses do not contain fiberglass. Organic wool serves as the natural flame barrier, meeting federal flammability standards without chemical flame retardants or fiberglass.

Can I verify Avocado's GOTS certification?

Yes. Avocado's GOTS license (CU863637) is publicly searchable in the GOTS certification database at global-standard.org.
