How Is My Avocado Mattress Packaged?

Most rolled and compressed Avocado mattresses are wrapped in 100% recycled kraft paper; some ship in recyclable plastic film during high demand.

Written by Mark Abrials

Since January 2022, Avocado has wrapped the majority of our rolled and compressed mattresses in 100% recycled kraft paper instead of plastic film — eliminating several pounds of single-use plastic per mattress.

Most rolled and compressed mattresses arrive in this kraft paper wrap. During periods of high demand, some still ship in a recyclable plastic film instead — so your mattress may arrive in either, depending on when it was packaged. We're continuing to expand paper wrapping toward every mattress.

The Kraft paper is widely accepted in curbside recycling programs. It is also home-compostable under typical backyard composting conditions, so if recycling isn't convenient, it can go directly into a compost bin rather than a landfill.

Our rolled and compressed mattresses ship in a rectangular box. The Luxury Organic Mattress ships flat and is not rolled or compressed.

What to do with your packaging:

  • Kraft paper wrap (if included) — recycle curbside or compost at home

  • Cardboard box — recycle curbside

  • Plastic film (the inner layer, or the outer wrap if your mattress shipped without kraft paper) — check your local recycling program; many grocery stores and retailers accept plastic film for drop-off recycling where curbside programs do not

This packaging change is part of our broader commitment to reducing waste across our operations. In 2025, Avocado achieved an 88% landfill diversion rate across our Los Angeles manufacturing and distribution facilities, validated by UL Solutions under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program — with a target of 90% (UL Silver) by the end of 2026.
