Since January 2022, Avocado has wrapped all rolled and compressed mattresses in 100% recycled kraft paper instead of plastic film — eliminating several pounds of single-use plastic per mattress.

The Kraft paper is widely accepted in curbside recycling programs. It is also home-compostable under typical backyard composting conditions, so if recycling isn't convenient, it can go directly into a compost bin rather than a landfill.

Our rolled and compressed mattresses ship in a rectangular box. The Luxury Organic Mattress ships flat and is not rolled or compressed.

What to do with your packaging:

  • Kraft paper wrap — recycle curbside or compost at home

  • Cardboard box — recycle curbside

  • Inner plastic layer — check your local recycling program; many grocery stores and retailers accept plastic film for drop-off recycling where curbside programs do not

This packaging change is part of our broader commitment to reducing waste across our operations. In 2025, Avocado achieved an 88% landfill diversion rate across our Los Angeles manufacturing and distribution facilities, validated by UL Solutions under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program — with a target of 90% (UL Silver) by the end of 2026.
