Certifications: What the Difference Means

Sealy's Naturals positioning is built around the use of recycled, recyclable, and plant-based materials in place of polyurethane foam — a meaningful step relative to a conventional Sealy mattress. The comparison with a certified-organic mattress is about how those material decisions are independently verified.

GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard — certifies the finished mattress, not individual components. It prohibits polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, and chemical adhesives in its finished-product requirements. A brand either holds a verifiable finished-product license in the public GOTS database or it does not. The Avocado Green Mattress holds a publicly verifiable GOTS finished-product license (CU863637), searchable at global-standard.org. The Sealy Naturals Hybrid does not hold a finished-product GOTS certification.

Natural vs. organic latex. Natural latex is rubber harvested from rubber trees, processed without certain synthetic additives — but "natural" is not a regulated term in the U.S. GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is the certification that audits organic latex from the plantation through processing. Avocado's latex is GOLS-certified; Sealy's Naturals latex is described as natural but is not GOLS-certified.

Avocado mattresses are certified against four additional finished-product standards beyond GREENGUARD Gold (which both mattresses hold): OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and UL® Formaldehyde-Free. The Sealy Naturals Hybrid does not hold these certifications.

PFAS Testing

Avocado screens for 679 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity across core materials and waterproof protectors. No detectable amounts have been found. Full results are published publicly in our Help Center.

Sealy has not published comparable PFAS test results for the Naturals Hybrid.

Warranty and Trial

The Avocado Green Mattress offers a 365-night sleep trial and a 25-year limited warranty with full non-prorated coverage in years 1–10. The Sealy Naturals Hybrid offers a 90-day trial (when purchased directly from Sealy) and a 10-year limited warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Sealy Naturals Hybrid GOTS certified?

No. The Sealy Naturals Hybrid is not listed as a GOTS-certified finished product in the public GOTS database. It is described by Sealy as containing recycled, recyclable, and plant-based materials, but it does not hold a finished-product organic certification.

Is "natural latex" the same as "organic latex"?

No. Natural latex is rubber tapped from rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis), as opposed to synthetic latex made from petroleum. "Natural" describes the source. GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) is the certification that audits the organic farming practices and processing of natural latex. All GOLS latex is natural, but not all natural latex is GOLS-certified. The Avocado Green Mattress uses GOLS-certified organic latex; the Sealy Naturals Hybrid uses natural latex that is not GOLS-certified.

Is the Sealy Naturals Hybrid an organic mattress?

A mattress can be marketed as organic only when the finished product has been independently certified to a recognized organic standard such as GOTS. The Sealy Naturals Hybrid does not hold a finished-product organic certification. The cover includes organic cotton blended with hemp and Tencel; the latex is natural but not GOLS-certified.

What is EWG Verified® and why does it matter?

EWG Verified® is an independent standard from the Environmental Working Group that requires full public ingredient disclosure and screens the finished mattress against EWG's health-based criteria — including prohibitions on chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, PFAS, and PVC. The Avocado Green Mattress is EWG Verified®; the Sealy Naturals Hybrid is not. For a full explanation, see What EWG Verified Means on a Mattress.

Can I verify Avocado's GOTS certification?

Yes. Avocado's GOTS license (CU863637) is publicly searchable in the GOTS certification database at global-standard.org.

Does Avocado test for PFAS?

Yes. Avocado screens for 679 PFAS substances at parts-per-billion sensitivity across core materials and waterproof protectors. No detectable amounts have been found.

Does the Avocado Green Mattress contain fiberglass?

No. Avocado mattresses do not contain fiberglass. Organic wool serves as the natural flame barrier, meeting federal flammability standards without chemical flame retardants or fiberglass.
