Bunkie Boards vs. Foundation: What's the Difference?

The choice between the two depends on the use, personal preferences, and desired bed height.

A bunkie board and a foundation are supportive bases for mattresses, but they differ in construction and purpose.

The Avocado Bunkie Board is a thin platform, only 1.5 inches thick, made from solid wood slats and covered with a breathable GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas cover. It provides a firm, flat surface without the use of springs or coils, perfect for trundle beds, bunk beds, day beds, and bed frames that are lacking proper support. A Bunkie Board can stop a mattress from sagging and slumping like a thicker foundation. A Bunkie Board is the best choice for some bed frames where structural support is needed, but a lower profile is desired or required.

On the other hand, a Foundation from Avocado uses a wood frame box with wood slats along the top. It is also covered in GOTS-certified organic fabric and features a breathable cover. Foundations function the same as the Bunkie Board but add more height (two options are available) compared to a Bunkie Board, making them suitable for bed frames designed for the use of a thicker foundation under a mattress. Due to their height, foundations are ideal for those who prefer a higher bed, a traditional design aesthetic or need assistance getting in and out of bed.
