Why Avocado Uses Multiple Certifications

No single certification catches everything. Avocado holds GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Class I, EWG Verified®, MADE SAFE®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde-Free — each closing gaps the others leave open. All are independent, annual, and verified.

Why Avocado Uses Multiple Certifications

No single certification catches everything. Each standard tests different substances using different methodologies against different exposure pathways. Avocado carries multiple independent certifications simultaneously, so that fewer gaps go unchecked, from the farms where materials are grown to the air in your bedroom.

This is not a collection of marketing badges. It is a compounding system of verification, each certification closing gaps the others leave open.

Why One Certification Is Not Enough

Every certification has a defined scope. GOTS governs organic supply chain integrity. OEKO-TEX tests for harmful substances in every material and component. EWG Verified requires full ingredient transparency. MADE SAFE screens against health and ecosystem hazards. GREENGUARD Gold tests for airborne chemical emissions in the room where you sleep.

These standards overlap by design. A substance that falls outside one standard's scope may be covered by another's. A product that passes one test may still carry risks that only a different methodology would detect. Carrying multiple certifications simultaneously is not redundancy — it is how gaps get closed.

Our Finished-Product Certifications

These independent standards verify the mattress as it arrives in your home — testing what is present, what is prohibited, and what enters the air you breathe.

1. GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

The foundation. The only certification that verifies the entire supply chain from farm through finished product.

GOTS is the starting point for everything. It is the only major organic standard that certifies finished textile products, including mattresses, and the only standard that audits the entire supply chain — every fiber, every facility, every handler from farm to finished product. GOTS prohibits synthetic pesticides, polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, chemical adhesives, PVC, and hazardous chemical inputs at every stage of production.

Critically, GOTS is the only certification that can certify a mattress as organic. Without GOTS certification for finished products, no organic claim for a mattress is independently verifiable.

Every Avocado mattress holds GOTS finished-product certification — license CU863637, certified under GOTS 8.0, verifiable today at global-standard.org. Every handler in our supply chain is independently certified. The organic integrity of the finished product has been audited from the field to your home.

2. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100, Class I

The most rigorous substance testing available. Every material, every fiber, every component — independently tested in a laboratory.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 is not a supply chain audit. It is laboratory testing — every material and component in the finished product is physically tested against human-ecological criteria for harmful substances. This is the most technically demanding certification in our portfolio because it does not rely on what should be in a product. It tests what is actually there.

Class I is the highest OEKO-TEX® category, designed specifically for products intended for babies and toddlers. Every Avocado mattress — adult and crib — holds Class I certification, not just the materials inside it.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 tests against thresholds for:

  • Formaldehyde

  • Phthalates

  • Heavy metals

  • Pesticide residues

  • pH value

  • Color fastness

  • Prohibited azo dyes

Because OEKO-TEX® tests every individual material and component — not just the finished product — it catches substances that might otherwise go undetected in a supply chain audit. It is the laboratory verification layer that sits on top of GOTS' supply chain verification.

Avocado's OEKO-TEX® certification number is 24.HUS.86422.

3. EWG Verified®

Full ingredient transparency. Every ingredient is screened against strict health-based criteria — and publicly listed.

EWG Verified® requires complete ingredient disclosure and finished-product screening against the Environmental Working Group's most rigorous health-based criteria. To earn EWG Verified® status, every ingredient must be disclosed and evaluated — there are no proprietary formulas, no undisclosed inputs, and no exceptions.

EWG Verified® screens against:

  • Carcinogens

  • Endocrine disruptors

  • Developmental and reproductive toxins

  • Chemicals of concern to the EWG

The distinction from EWG Verified® lies in transparency. It is not enough to pass a test — the ingredients must be publicly accessible and individually evaluated. Consumers can look up every Avocado mattress in the EWG database and see exactly what has been screened and verified.

4. MADE SAFE®

The broadest hazard screening available. Thousands of substances have been evaluated for their effects on human health, aquatic life, and wildlife.

MADE SAFE® screens finished products against thousands of substances known or suspected to harm human health, aquatic ecosystems, and wildlife. Certification requires complete disclosure of ingredients and independent evaluation against a hazard list that goes beyond what most regulatory frameworks require.

MADE SAFE® screens against:

  • Carcinogens

  • Endocrine disruptors

  • Reproductive toxins

  • Behavioral toxins

  • Environmental pollutants

  • Chemicals harmful to aquatic life and wildlife

Where EWG Verified® focuses on human health criteria, MADE SAFE® extends the evaluation to ecosystem and environmental hazards. Together, they cover a broader hazard landscape than either standard covers alone.

5. GREENGUARD Gold

Independent air quality verification. What enters the air in your bedroom — tested, not assumed.

GREENGUARD Gold certifies finished products against chemical emission limits specifically for bedrooms and living spaces, testing for more than 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It is the standard that answers the question GOTS, OEKO-TEX®, EWG, and MADE SAFE® do not directly address: what enters the air in the room where you sleep?

GREENGUARD Gold applies stricter limits than standard GREENGUARD certification and specifically accounts for the health and safety of children and sensitive individuals. It requires that products meet California Department of Public Health standards — among the most stringent indoor air quality requirements in the world.

Every Avocado mattress and furniture piece is GREENGUARD Gold certified. Our mattresses meet those limits because the materials we use don't create the emissions problem in the first place.

6. UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification

Independent validation that our products contain no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors.

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen commonly found in adhesives, fabric treatments, and finishing agents used in conventional mattress manufacturing. UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification independently validates that our products contain no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors — not a brand claim, but a verified, independently confirmed result.

This certification closes a specific gap: formaldehyde restrictions appear in other standards, but this verification is dedicated entirely to that single substance, confirming the claim through independent laboratory testing.

How the Certifications Work Together

Certification

What It Tests

What It Closes

GOTS

Organic supply chain, from the farm through the finished product

Synthetic pesticides, prohibited inputs, and the chain of custody

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100: Class I

Every material and component is laboratory tested

Harmful substances present in actual materials — Class I is the highest OEKO-TEX® category, reserved for products that come into direct contact with babies and toddlers

EWG Verified®

Full ingredient transparency, health-based screening

Undisclosed inputs, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors

MADE SAFE®

Broad hazard screening across health and the ecosystem

Reproductive toxins, environmental pollutants, behavioral toxins

GREENGUARD Gold

Airborne chemical emissions in indoor spaces

VOCs in the air of your bedroom

UL Formaldehyde-Free

Formaldehyde and precursors

Dedicated formaldehyde verification

No single certification in this table covers everything the others cover. Together, they form a system where the gaps in one standard are the scope of another.

What This Means in Practice

When an Avocado mattress arrives in your home, it has been:

  • Verified as certified organic across the entire supply chain under GOTS

  • Laboratory tested at the material and component level under OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I

  • Fully disclosed and screened for health hazards under EWG Verified®

  • Evaluated against thousands of known harmful substances under MADE SAFE®

  • Tested for airborne emissions in bedroom conditions under GREENGUARD Gold

  • Independently confirmed formaldehyde-free under UL verification

Each of these verifications was conducted by an independent organization with no financial relationship to Avocado's product outcome. None are self-reported. None is optional. All are annually renewed.
