No Built-In Waterproof Layer — By Design
None of our crib mattresses include a built-in waterproof coating. That's a deliberate material decision: fewer processed materials between a sleeping body and the certified organic surface underneath.
For waterproof protection, we recommend our Organic Crib Waterproof Protector — GOTS-certified organic cotton with a thin plant-based waterproof membrane derived from cornstarch. It can be removed and washed independently, keeping the certified organic sleep surface beneath it uncompromised. Keeping multiple protectors in rotation — one on the crib, one in the wash — means the sleep surface is never without clean, certified protection.
Meets U.S. Safety Standard 16 CFR 1241
All Avocado crib mattresses have been independently tested and meet U.S. safety standard 16 CFR 1241 (which incorporates ASTM F2933).
For dual-sided models, both sides have been independently tested and meet this standard. Firmness was evaluated at multiple locations across each surface — both sides passed all firmness tests. Whether the infant or toddler side is used, both meet infant firmness requirements.
PFAS Testing
All Avocado crib mattresses were included in our comprehensive PFAS screening — 320 substances tested at parts-per-billion sensitivity via LC/MS/MS and GC-MS. No detectable amounts were found. Full results are published in our Help Center.
Safe Sleep Guidelines
Use only a fitted bottom sheet specifically made for crib use, along with a mattress pad and/or waterproof pad. Do not place stuffed animals, pillows, quilts, or comforters in the crib while your baby sleeps, as they may prevent proper air circulation around your baby's face. Cribs should be fully enclosed to ensure safe and secure sleep.
A Note on Sizing
Every Avocado mattress is handmade in California, using the same quantity of natural and organic materials appropriate for each mattress size. As such, subtle size variations may occur, as is characteristic of any handmade product.
Want to measure yours? Our toppers have curves, so use tailor's tape to get an accurate measurement. It's what our seamstresses use when crafting your topper. A standard tape measure is meant for rigid surfaces.
