Why Sleep Organic? For Babies.

A nursery is the sharpest test of whether a company's standards are real — because the margin for exposure is smallest and the consequences are longest-lived.

The exposure case starts before birth.

Pregnant and nursing parents share their sleep environment's chemical profile with developing systems at their most vulnerable. The endocrine disruptors and volatile organic compounds present in conventional foam mattresses are among the chemical classes most studied for reproductive and developmental harm. What the mattress is made of — and what it releases into the air — matters before the nursery is even ready.

Babies sleep more and breathe more of what's beneath them.

Infants spend up to 16 hours a day on their sleep surface. Their developing bodies absorb chemicals at higher rates relative to body weight than adults. Their respiratory and immune systems are still forming. Peer-reviewed research has shown that VOC concentrations at the mattress surface can be approximately twice as high as just a few feet away, with body heat further increasing emissions — meaning an infant sleeping face-down on a conventional foam mattress inhales air at the point of highest chemical concentration, for the longest duration, during the developmental window of greatest vulnerability.

What certified organic means in a nursery.

A GOTS-certified organic crib mattress has been independently audited from farm through finished product against a standard that prohibits synthetic pesticides, hazardous chemical inputs, polyurethane foam, and chemical flame retardants. That audit covers the entire mattress — not just the cotton, not just the cover, but the product your baby sleeps on every night.

OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I is the highest OEKO-TEX testing category — specifically designed for products intended for babies and toddlers — independently testing the finished product against strict limits for formaldehyde, phthalates, heavy metals, pesticide residues, and other harmful substances. MADE SAFE® and EWG Verified® screen against carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and reproductive toxins. GREENGUARD Gold certifies compliance with airborne chemical emission limits for rooms where infants sleep.

Each Avocado Organic Crib Mattress holds every one of these certifications simultaneously. In 2024, we published full PFAS test results — 320 substances screened at parts-per-billion sensitivity across our core materials, including our crib mattress. No detectable amounts were found. We were among the first mattress brands to include crib mattresses in a public PFAS disclosure.

Consumer Reports®, in partnership with MADE SAFE®, named it one of only three Top Choices in its 2025 evaluation of crib mattresses, with no known material risks identified.

The design choice that protects the sleep surface.

Our crib mattresses are designed without a built-in waterproof layer — because fewer processed materials between a sleeping infant and the certified organic surface underneath is a better answer than convenience. For waterproof protection, we offer a separate GOTS-certified organic crib mattress protector, designed to be removed, washed, and replaced independently so the organic sleep surface beneath it remains uncompromised.

For the families who need it most, the standard should be the highest. That is what we build toward.
