2-Stage Crib Mattresses: Why Two Firmness Levels, and When to Flip

A 2-stage crib mattress has two different firmness levels, one on each side: a firmer infant side and a softer toddler side. The design exists because the firmness appropriate for a newborn and the firmness comfortable for a toddler are different, and a single mattress can serve both stages if you flip it at the right time.

A firm, flat surface does not conform around a baby's face or allow the head to sink in. When the Consumer Product Safety Commission established the federal crib mattress standard, it added a firmness test specifically to address suffocation hazards associated with overly soft crib mattresses. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat, non-inclined sleep surface for infants to reduce the risk of suffocation and of wedging or entrapment. Federal requirements for crib mattresses sold in the United States are set out in 16 CFR Part 1241, which incorporates ASTM F2933 and covers firmness, dimensions, and fit.

Softness that reads as comfortable to an adult is not appropriate for an infant sleep surface. This is the central point of a 2-stage design: firmness matches the stage, not adult preference.

Once a child is sleeping as a toddler, position is self-directed, and the child has more mass, moves more, and sleeps in varied positions. A slightly softer surface adds comfort at that stage.

Flip the mattress to the toddler side once your child has moved past the infant stage and has developed the strength and coordination to move freely during sleep. For most children, that transition falls between 12 and 18 months. No need to rush it; a toddler can keep sleeping on the firmer infant side.

No. There is no requirement to flip a 2-stage crib mattress. Your child can continue sleeping on the firmer infant side after infancy. The toddler side provides a slightly softer comfort option once your child is ready for the transition.
