Explained: Layers of our Organic Latex Mattress (Pure Talalay® & GOLS Dunlop Latex, Organic Cotton & Organic Wool)
Your Organic Latex Mattress is thoughtfully designed using natural and certified organic materials. Unlike most Avocado hybrid mattresses, the Organic Latex Mattress does not contain an innerspring support system. It is an all-foam, GOTS-certified organic mattress designed to deliver comfort, support, and durability.
The Avocado Organic Latex Mattress is one of the few, if only, all-foam, certified organic mattresses to combine FSC® certified Pure Talalay® latex with GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex.
Here’s a closer look at the mattress build:
Organic Cotton Cover — Soft & Breathable
We start with a soft, breathable organic cotton cover. This ensures that the fabric you sleep on is pure, safe, and naturally cool to the touch. It allows air to circulate and prevents overheating throughout the night. It is made with 97% organic cotton.
Organic Wool — Fire Barrier & Temperature Regulation
Just beneath the cover is a layer of organic wool batting. Wool is a natural temperature regulator and moisture wick, helping you stay cool in summer and warm in winter. It also acts as a natural flame barrier, enabling us to meet federal flammability standards without the use of chemical flame retardants.
Soft Pure Talalay® Comfort Layer — Contouring & Resiliency
Next is 6 inches of premium Pure Talalay® latex. This thick layer delivers buoyant, responsive comfort. Talalay latex contours to your body, providing gentle pressure relief while remaining breathable and resilient. It’s what gives the mattress its uplifting and cloud-like feel.
Dunlop Support Layer — Core Stability & Longevity
Beneath the Talalay layer is 3 inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex. Dunlop latex is denser and firmer, providing the stable foundation that keeps your mattress supportive and durable over time. This layer helps maintain proper spinal alignment and prevents sagging.
Hand-Tufted Construction — Quality & Durability
All of these layers are needle-tufted by hand using soft cotton ribbons in up to 24 locations. This traditional method keeps the mattress layers securely in place without the use of chemical adhesives. It also enhances durability and gives the mattress its signature, artisanal bedmaker's finish.
Reinforced Handles — Easy to Rotate
Finally, the mattress is finished with four reinforced side handles. This makes it easier to rotate or move your mattress when needed.
Why Is the Dual Latex Design Better?
Our Organic Latex Mattress uses two distinct types of natural latex — Pure Talalay® and Dunlop. This dual-latex design is intentional because each type of latex has unique strengths. By combining them, we create a mattress that balances comfort, support, and durability better than single-latex, all-foam designs.
The Benefits of Talalay Latex (Top Comfort Layer)
Responsive & Buoyant: Pure Talalay® latex has an open-cell structure that gives it a lighter, “springier” feel.
Pressure Relief: It gently contours to your body, easing tension in the shoulders, hips, and back.
Breathability: Pure Talalay® latex allows more airflow than other foams, helping to regulate sleep temperature.
The Benefits of Dunlop Latex (Base Support Layer)
Denser & Firmer: Dunlop latex is naturally heavier and more supportive.
Long-Lasting Stability: It resists sagging and maintains structure, ensuring the mattress performs for years.
Natural Alignment: Provides the solid foundation needed to keep your spine properly supported.
Why They Work Better Together
Balanced Feel: Pure Talalay® on top gives a soft, plush sensation, while Dunlop underneath ensures strong, durable support.
Adaptive Comfort: The mattress feels cushioning without being too soft, and supportive without being too firm.
All-Natural Construction: Unlike mattresses that rely on synthetic foams, this design achieves both comfort similar to "memory foam" and durable support, yet uses natural and organic materials.
GOTS Matters: What You Need to Know
Natural and organic are not the same. “Natural” has no legal definition, while “organic” is a higher, regulated standard. Certified organic products are independently verified to meet strict requirements for health, sustainability, and social responsibility. If you want true confidence in what’s inside your mattress — and assurance that it was made with integrity from farm to finish — look for certifications like GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard), recognized by the USDA’s National Organic Program, and GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) for latex. GOTS provides the trust that marketing claims alone cannot. Our Organic Latex Mattress is a GOTS-certified organic mattress listed on the GOTS public database.
