We believe radical honesty and transparency build trust. That's why Avocado was one of the first mattress brands to publicly share the mattress law label with customers before they make a purchase. Because we are so proud of what's inside our mattresses, toppers, and pillows — and what is not inside — we fully share what our labels say before you buy. Each product below links to a PDF of its law label for a standard size (Queen for adult mattresses and toppers; standard size for crib mattresses and pillows).

Please note that the date on the law label refers to when the label was printed and the PDF produced, not when the product was manufactured.

Background on Mattress Law Labels

Law labels are legally required on mattresses, upholstery, and stuffed articles in 31 states and Canada. The purpose is to inform consumers of the hidden filling materials inside bedding and furniture products, similar to a nutrition label on food.

Please note:

  1. Our mattresses, toppers, and pillows are made using a combination of domestic and imported materials in our GOTS- and GOLS-certified facilities in Los Angeles, California, and Tecate, Mexico.

  2. The terminology and information on the law label are strictly regulated for uniformity. Modifying terms such as "GOTS," "GOLS," "organic," "natural," or "100%" are not permitted in the top "filling materials" section in some states, but can appear elsewhere on the label.

  3. The organic cotton cover is not listed in the top "filling materials" section because the cotton ticking is not inside the mattress; it is listed in a lower section, where modifying terms such as "organic" are allowed.

  4. Filling materials are listed as a percentage by weight.

  5. U.S. law requires these tags to inform consumers whether the stuffed article contains new or recycled materials. All Avocado products are made with all new materials.

  6. For mattresses, percentages will vary slightly based on size. The size shown on each label is noted in the table below. For toppers, percentages also differ slightly between plush and firm options.

  7. Wool-filled products require the statement "contents sterilized" by law in five states, so we include it on all our labels for uniformity.

Subject to change: We often enhance and improve our products. As a result, label content is subject to change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the law label say "imported materials"?

Our mattresses are assembled in our Fullerton, California, facility — but many of our certified organic raw materials are sourced globally: GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex from India, Guatemala, and Asia, GOTS-certified organic wool from India, and GOTS-certified organic cotton from Turkey, India, Canada, and North Carolina. "Imported" reflects where these materials are grown and processed, not the quality. Every component is traceable back to a certified organic source.

Why doesn't the label say "organic" or "GOTS"?

The law label is a regulated disclosure of filling materials by weight — its terminology is set by state law for uniformity, and modifying terms like "organic," "natural," "GOTS," "GOLS," or "100%" aren't permitted on the label itself. Certifications aren't part of the law label format. Our finished mattresses are independently certified to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) under license CU863637, and the organic Dunlop latex inside is certified to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). You can verify all certifications on our certifications page.

Why does the label say "contents sterilized"?

Five states require this statement on wool-filled products by law. We include it on all of our wool-containing labels for uniformity. Our organic wool is mechanically cleaned without chemicals, then steam-treated to meet regulatory requirements.

Where's the organic cotton cover listed on the label?

The organic cotton ticking is shown in the lower section of the label rather than in the top "filling materials" section because the cotton ticking wraps the mattress rather than sitting inside it. That lower section is also where descriptive terms like "organic" are permitted. For more on the ticking itself, see What Is Avocado's Mattress Fabric Cover Made Of?

Why do the percentages on the label differ by mattress size?

Filling materials are listed as a percentage by weight. Because larger mattresses use proportionally more of certain materials than others, the percentages shift slightly between sizes. The size shown on each PDF above is noted in the table.

Is the date on the law label the date of manufacture?

It's the date the label was printed, which is typically the same day or the previous working day.

What's actually inside each mattress, layer by layer?

The law label shows the percentage breakdown by weight; for a full layer-by-layer view of each mattress — including coils, comfort layers, and material origins — see What's Inside an Avocado Mattress: Layer-by-Layer Construction.

What does "intended to be used without a foundation" mean?

Avocado mattresses are designed and certified to the federal 16 CFR Part 1633 flammability standard without a box spring or foundation. They're built to sit on a slatted base or platform bed — the layers of organic latex, wool, and coils provide their own structural support. If you'd prefer a traditional setup, our foundations and bed frames are specifically designed to meet the structural support requirements of our warranty.

Can I remove the law label from my mattress?

No — please leave it intact. The law label is your proof that the mattress is authentic, new, and made of the materials disclosed at the time of sale. State and federal law label requirements exist specifically to prevent fraud: reselling used mattresses as new, undisclosed filling materials, and counterfeit products. Removing or tampering with the tag also voids your Avocado warranty and disqualifies the product from return. For full warranty terms, see What Is Avocado's Warranty?
