What Is a Hybrid Mattress?

A hybrid mattress combines an innerspring coil support system with comfort layers on top — typically foam, latex, or both. The term describes the construction method, not the materials. What those comfort layers are made of, how the mattress is assembled, and what certifications cover the finished product vary enormously between brands — and those differences are where the meaningful comparison begins.

Most hybrid mattresses pair a coil support system with polyurethane foam comfort layers — a petroleum-derived material that may off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene during sleep. Chemical flame retardants are commonly added to meet federal flammability standards, and chemical adhesives bond the comfort layers together. None of these inputs is required to be disclosed publicly.

An organic hybrid replaces polyurethane foam with certified organic latex — derived from rubber tree sap — and uses organic wool as a natural flame barrier, eliminating the need for chemical flame retardants entirely. The coil system remains, but the material profile of the finished product is fundamentally different.

The distinction matters because a hybrid mattress is a surface you spend eight or more hours on every night, breathing whatever it off-gases into the air around you. Whether that air contains VOCs from petroleum-derived foam or nothing detectable from certified organic materials is not a cosmetic difference.

Most Avocado hybrid mattresses are built around three core elements: a GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex comfort system, organic wool and cotton, and a fabric-encased innerspring with up to 2,112 individually encased coils in a 7-zone ergonomic configuration. We also have variations that don't use wool or latex foam.

No polyurethane foam. GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex — certified to contain 95% or more certified organic content — replaces petroleum-derived foam entirely. Latex is more responsive and more breathable, and it outlasts foam significantly, which is why Avocado's mattresses are backed by a 25-year warranty.

No chemical flame retardants. Organic wool is a naturally fire-resistant material that meets federal flammability standards without chemical treatment. The same wool that regulates temperature and wicks moisture also eliminates the need for the flame-retardant chemistry linked in research to endocrine disruption and neurodevelopmental effects. In our Vegan Mattress, charcoal-infused organic latex is featured, since wool is not used.

Factory-assembled and hand needle-tufted. Every Avocado hybrid is handcrafted and hand-needle-tufted at our Fullerton, California, facility using domestic and imported materials. Tufting physically secures every comfort layer with organic wool rosettes and fabric tape, eliminating the need for chemical adhesives between layers and ensuring the mattress arrives as a complete, verified finished product — not as components requiring home assembly. All of our mattresses are needle-tufted, except our Eco Organic Mattress and Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

Six simultaneous finished-product certifications. Every Avocado hybrid holds GOTS (license CU863637), OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, GREENGUARD Gold, and UL Formaldehyde-Free — independently verified across six overlapping standards that test for different substances through different methodologies. These certifications cover the finished product as it arrives in your home, not individual components.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) explicitly certifies finished products — including mattresses — not individual materials. A brand that holds GOTS certification for its cotton or wool, but not for the finished mattress, is making a component-level claim. GOTS 8.0 Labelling guidelines explicitly prohibit the use of GOTS certification to describe a finished product when only a component holds the certification.

This distinction matters most in the hybrid category, where mattresses are built from multiple materials that may each have individual certifications — but the finished assembly may not have been independently audited as a whole.
