How Do Avocado Mattresses Keep Wool and Cotton From Shifting?

Avocado uses quilted panel construction — not adhesives — to keep wool and cotton in place. Each panel is quilted to its specific location and function. This article details the materials for each panel, including the gusset, bottom, side, and top.

Avocado mattresses use quilted panel construction — not chemical adhesives — to secure organic wool and cotton in place throughout the mattress's life. Each panel is individually quilted with a design specific to its location and function within the mattress, ensuring materials stay evenly distributed across every surface without synthetic bonding agents.

No polyester, chemical flame retardants, or synthetic fire socks are used in any quilted panel.

The underside panel is designed to prevent the mattress from sliding on its foundation.

  • GOTS-certified organic needle-punch wool

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton canvas in a herringbone weave — the weave pattern creates friction that prevents the mattress from shifting on its base

Side Panels — Quilted Panel Construction

The comfort panels on the top and sides of the mattress.

  • GOTS-certified organic cotton

  • GOTS-approved 20 GSM chlorine-free polypropylene non-woven fabric, used to hold the cotton layers together during quilting

A note on polypropylene: This thin non-woven layer is a petroleum-derived functional component — not an organic material. It is permitted under GOTS certification as a functional accessory where no certified organic alternative currently meets the structural and durability requirements of the quilting process. It is food-grade and non-toxic. Organic fabric alternatives exist, but they currently introduce cost and performance tradeoffs that would affect both the accessibility of our core product line and the long-term durability that underpins our warranty.
