Natural latex and organic wool — the primary materials in every Avocado mattress — are inhospitable environments for dust mites compared to conventional synthetic foams. Latex has an inherently dense, closed structure that limits the moisture retention and warmth that dust mites require to thrive. Organic wool is naturally breathable and moisture-wicking, helping to regulate humidity at the sleep surface, where dust mites concentrate.
That said, no mattress is dust-mite proof. Dust mites live in the textile layers of any sleep surface — including organic cotton ticking — where they have access to shed skin cells and sufficient moisture. For customers with allergies, asthma, or sensitivities, the materials are only part of the answer. How you protect and maintain the sleep surface matters, too.
Reducing Dust Mite Exposure
The single most effective step is using a mattress protector. Our GOTS-certified organic waterproof mattress protector creates a barrier between the sleep surface and the textile layers where dust mites colonize, and can be removed and washed regularly — keeping the underlying mattress at its certified organic standard.
Additional steps that help:
Wash your mattress protector and bedding regularly in hot water (130°F or higher kills dust mites).
Use GOTS-certified organic pillow protectors and pillowcases for the same reason — pillows are a significant habitat for dust mites.
Ensure airflow beneath and around the mattress. Dust mites need humidity to survive; adequate ventilation reduces the conditions they require.
Vacuum the mattress surface periodically, particularly if you don't use a protector.
A Note on Certifications
Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold certified, which independently verifies that chemical emissions — including those associated with synthetic materials that can exacerbate respiratory sensitivities — are within strict limits for bedrooms and children's rooms. OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certification screens the finished product against a broad range of substances harmful to human health. Neither certification specifically addresses dust mites, but both are relevant to customers managing allergies or asthma who care about the full chemical profile of their sleep environment.
If you have specific allergy concerns, we recommend consulting your physician about the sleep environment changes most appropriate for your situation.
