Why Formaldehyde Is Dangerous

To hold mattresses together, some companies use adhesives that contain formaldehyde. This gas is a known volatile organic compound (VOC) — a chemical with a high vapor pressure at room temperature that can linger in your home. Formaldehyde is a particularly harmful VOC: it is linked to asthma, allergies, and lung, nose, and throat cancers, and was classified as a known human carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program in 2011. The National Cancer Institute reports that at air concentrations exceeding 0.1 parts per million, formaldehyde can cause watery and burning eyes, nose and throat irritation, coughing, wheezing, nausea, and skin irritation, with children and sensitive individuals most significantly affected.

Formaldehyde does not belong on a mattress, or anywhere you spend a third of your life breathing. That is why we hand-tuft our mattresses — a traditional bedmaker's technique that bonds layers with fabric ribbons and wool rosettes instead of chemical adhesives.

Our Formaldehyde-Free Promise

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a globally recognized safety science organization with more than 130 years of product safety and emissions testing experience. Their formaldehyde test is performed in an environmental chamber that detects emissions at the finished-product level.

UL has independently certified our Green Mattress, Green Pillow, Organic Crib Mattress, and many other products to contain no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors, meeting UL's Gold Standard for Building Materials, Finishes, and Furnishings.

UL Formaldehyde-Free Claim Verification is one of six Avocado holds — alongside GOTS, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I, MADE SAFE®, EWG Verified®, and GREENGUARD Gold — each testing the finished product through a different methodology against different exposure pathways. No single standard catches everything. Together, they leave fewer gaps unchecked.
