What Is Zero Waste Manufacturing?
The concept of "zero waste manufacturing" refers to the goal of eliminating waste from the manufacturing process by reducing or eliminating the generation of waste materials and maximizing the use of resources. This can be achieved by reducing material usage, optimizing production processes, reusing or recycling waste materials, and utilizing renewable energy sources. The aim of zero waste manufacturing is to achieve a closed-loop system where all materials are reused or recycled, and waste is minimized or eliminated.
Why Is it Important?
Zero waste manufacturing is important because it can help reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing activities and conserve natural resources. By minimizing waste and using resources efficiently, zero waste manufacturing can reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, conserve energy and water, and lower greenhouse gas emissions. It can also help companies reduce costs by minimizing raw material usage and waste disposal costs. Zero waste manufacturing represents a shift toward more sustainable manufacturing practices prioritizing environmental and social responsibility.
Our Current Diversion Rate: 88%
In 2025, Avocado achieved an 88% landfill diversion rate across our Los Angeles manufacturing and distribution facilities, independently validated by UL Solutions under the UL 2799 Environmental Claim Validation program. UL 2799 recognizes multiple diversion pathways, including recycling, composting, reuse, and waste-to-energy. Our diversion is driven primarily by recycling, organics recovery, reuse, and donations.
Our target is 90% diversion (UL Silver certification) by the end of 2026, with a longer-term goal of Gold at 95% or above. UL Silver requires at least 90% diversion through methods other than waste-to-energy.
