A platform bed, bed slats, foundation, or adjustable bed is best for your mattress. We design our mattresses to work best on a rigid, non-spring foundation, platform, adjustable bed base, or slatted foundation with a maximum spacing of five inches between slats.

If you want a foundation, we recommend our Avocado Green Mattress Foundation.

You can use a foundation with our mattresses, but it is not required (many modern bed frames do not require them). A reminder that a foundation and a box spring are not the same. A foundation is a rigid structural support for a mattress. Think of a foundation as a solid, empty box. A box spring, in contrast, actually contains springs. We do not recommended a box spring. A box spring will make our mattress — which already contains a fabric-encased innerspring unit — very bouncy. It also does not provide a supportive foundation.

Foundations Are Not Required, But Work Great

Some Avocado customers opt for foundations to allow them to place their new mattress on a bed frame (which has side rails, but limited interior support) or a traditional bed, where an additional layer is needed for support or desired for aesthetic reasons. That's why we created our Avocado Green Mattress Foundation. It's made with FSC® certified (C156318) wood and GOTS-certified organic cotton — plus it's GREENGUARD Gold® certified by UL Environment for low emissions.
