Is There a Foundation That You Recommend?

Avocado's own GOTS-certified, GREENGUARD Gold-certified Foundation comes in low and standard height, standard and heavy-duty, with and without legs. Box springs and floor use are not compatible and void the warranty.

Yes — we make our own. The Avocado Foundation is built with FSC-certified wood (C156318) and GOTS-certified organic cotton ticking, and is GREENGUARD Gold certified by UL Solutions for low chemical emissions. It's the support surface designed specifically for our mattresses.

Choosing Your Foundation

The Avocado Foundation is available in several configurations:

  • Height: Low or Standard — choose based on your bed frame height and preferred overall bed height

  • Weight capacity: Standard or Heavy Duty

  • Leg options: With or without legs — foundations without legs are designed to sit inside a bed frame with side rails; foundations with legs can stand independently

If you're unsure which configuration fits your frame, contact us before ordering.

What Support Options Work

Avocado mattresses are designed for a rigid, non-spring support surface. Compatible options include:

  • A platform bed with a solid or slatted surface

  • A slatted foundation or bed frame with a maximum of five inches between slats

  • The Avocado Foundation on a bed frame with side rails

  • An adjustable base [Link to adjustable base]

For large beds (Queen and above), the support surface should include a center support leg or rail that contacts the floor. Without center support, the mattress and foundation can sag visibly over time.

What Doesn't Work

Do not use a box spring. A box spring contains springs and provides no rigid support — it will make your mattress excessively bouncy and will not support the innerspring unit properly over time.

Do not place the mattress directly on the floor. Floor use restricts airflow beneath the mattress, promotes moisture retention, and voids the warranty.

Foundation vs. Box Spring

These are not interchangeable terms. A foundation is a rigid structural support — essentially a solid or slatted box. A box spring contains actual springs. Only foundations, platform surfaces, and adjustable bases are compatible with Avocado mattresses.

Warranty Note

Using an incompatible support surface — including a box spring, a slatted frame with gaps wider than five inches, or placing the mattress on the floor — can affect mattress performance and void the warranty. If you're unsure whether your current setup qualifies, contact us before your trial period ends.
