Most mattresses are built around polyurethane foam — a petroleum-derived material that compresses permanently over time, losing the structure it started with. The average conventional mattress is replaced every seven to ten years, not because the owner chose to upgrade, but because the foam gave out.
Avocado mattresses are built differently. Organic Dunlop latex and Pure Talalay® are inherently resilient — they return to their original shape after compression rather than taking a permanent set, the way poly foam does. Latex loses hardly any height over the years of usage. Organic wool compresses slightly with use but evens out over time and redistributes with regular rotation. Individually encased coils flex independently and maintain their temper over time. These are materials chosen for longevity, not just comfort.
Durability is not incidental to Avocado mattresses' design. It is part of what makes them a better environmental choice — a mattress that lasts significantly longer means fewer mattresses produced, shipped, and disposed of over a lifetime. Our warranties reflect that confidence in the materials. Depending on your model, your Avocado mattress is warranted for up to 25 years.
Independent durability testing by Leggett & Platt's International Technical Center, using ASTM-certified methods, found that the standard Avocado Green Mattress lost approximately 1% of its height after 100,000 Rollator cycles — equivalent to 10 years of use. Total accumulated compression under repeated 230-pound body pressure measured 0.80 inches, well within the 1.75-inch benchmark for high-performing mattresses. Full test results are published here.
What happens in the first 30–90 days
Natural latex feels different from foam from the first night. It is more responsive — it pushes back rather than conforming slowly — and many people coming from conventional foam mattresses find it firmer than expected at first.
This is normal, and it changes. The organic wool quilted into the top of the mattress compresses slightly in the areas where you sleep most, creating a subtle contouring effect that develops over the first weeks of use. The latex core itself also softens slightly as it breaks in. Most people find the mattress reaches its optimal feel somewhere between 30 and 90 days.
A few things worth knowing during this period:
The wool layer will show slight compression where you sleep. This is expected behavior, not damage. It is part of how the mattress develops its personalized feel, and it will distribute more evenly as you complete your rotation schedule.
If the mattress still feels firmer than you expected after 60–90 days, an organic mattress topper can add a layer of comfort without altering the structural support of the mattress underneath.
Your sleep trial begins the day you receive your mattress. A 30-day minimum is required before a return can be initiated — this exists because the break-in period is real, and a mattress evaluated at day three is not the same mattress you will sleep on at day sixty.
Rotation: the single most important care step
Rotating your mattress is the most effective way to extend its life and ensure even wear across the wool and latex layers.
Rotation schedule:
Monthly, head to toe, for the first six months
Every other month for the life of the mattress
Avocado mattresses are one-sided and should never be flipped. Rotating head to toe is the correct motion.
Rotating your mattress distributes compression evenly across the wool comfort layer. Some settling of the wool is expected with any use — that is normal behavior, not damage. The rotation that prevents this is that settling concentrates in one area, which, over time, creates an uneven surface. A mattress that has been consistently rotated will show even, gradual compression across the full sleep surface. One that hasn't will show more pronounced wear where you sleep most.
Failure to rotate as specified may void your warranty — not as a technicality, but because uneven compression from lack of rotation is distinguishable from a manufacturing defect and is excluded from coverage on that basis.
Proper support: what the warranty requires
The foundation your mattress rests on directly affects how it performs and how long it lasts — and your warranty coverage. An inadequate support surface is the most common reason warranty claims are denied.
The requirements exist for specific reasons. Slats spaced too far apart place concentrated stress on the pocketed coils directly above the gaps, which can cause coils to pop or break over time. On Queen, King, and California King sizes, a frame without adequate center support will visibly sag under the combined weight of the mattress and sleepers — and a sagging foundation creates uneven wear in the mattress above it that no amount of rotation will correct. These are not edge cases. They are the most common avoidable causes of premature mattress wear.
Requirements for third-party foundations, bed frames, and bases:
Queen, King, and California King: minimum 5–6 leg supports, including at least one center support leg
Twin and Full: minimum 4 leg supports
Slatted frames: slats no more than 5 inches apart, each slat at least 2.5 inches wide
Box springs are not appropriate support surfaces and will void the sleep trial and warranty
The simplest choice: All foundations, bunkie boards, bed frames, and adjustable bases sold by Avocado are specifically designed to meet the warranty's structural support requirements. If you use an Avocado foundation, support requirements are satisfied.
The Extra Firm Mattress has an additional requirement: it must be used on a properly designed support system that includes a rigid center support beam with at least one leg to the floor for Queen-size and larger sizes. We strongly recommend pairing it with our heavy-duty foundation.
Mattresses may not be used directly on the floor. Floor use voids the warranty. A floor eliminates the airflow underneath the mattress that natural materials need to breathe and regulate temperature. Without ventilation, condensation and humidity may accumulate in some climates, creating conditions for mold growth that is not covered under warranty. Floor level also increases exposure to moisture, insects, and uneven support that accelerates wear in ways a proper foundation prevents.
Body impressions: normal wear vs. a warrantable defect
Organic wool will compress slightly in the areas where you sleep. This is expected and not the same as sagging. The distinction matters — both for your experience of the mattress and for warranty purposes.
Normal body impressions (not covered under warranty): The warranty excludes body impressions less than 1.5 inches, measured below the quilt level with no weight applied to the mattress. Some settling of the fiber in the quilt is expected with use and is not considered a defect. Regular rotation distributes this compression evenly, preventing it from concentrating in one area.
Warrantable defects:
Product | Warrantable indentation threshold |
Green, Vegan, Wool, Extra Firm, Latex, Luxury Organic Mattresses | Visible indentation ≥ 1.5 inches |
Luxury Plush Pillow-top and Ultra Plush Box-Top Mattresses | Visible indentation ≥ 2 inches |
Organic Crib Mattress, Eco Organic Crib Mattress | Visible indentation ≥ 3/4 inch |
Mattress Toppers | Visible indentation ≥ 1 inch |
All measurements are taken with no weight applied to the mattress, using tailor's tape (not a standard tape measure — Avocado products have curves). The indentation must be visible to the naked eye and must not be associated with an inadequate foundation or failure to rotate.
If you believe you have a warrantable defect, the first step is to measure correctly, check your foundation, and confirm your rotation history before contacting support.

Warranties are non-transferable and apply only to the original purchaser. Proof of purchase, law tag photos, and photos of the mattress and foundation are required for all claims.
How to submit a warranty claim
If you have measured a visible indentation that meets the warrantable threshold, verified your foundation meets the requirements, and confirmed your rotation history, contact support at [email protected] to initiate a claim.
You will need:
Valid original proof of purchase
Photos of the law tag showing it is unaltered
Photos of the mattress, foundation, and the defect
Measurements taken with a tailor's tape with no weight on the mattress
Full claim instructions are in the warranty claim article.
Care tips that extend mattress life
Use a breathable mattress protector from the first night. A protector keeps the mattress in a condition suitable for donation if you return it, and protects against the stains and moisture damage that void the warranty.
Maintain good ventilation in your bedroom. Humid conditions are the primary cause of mold, which is not covered under warranty and is entirely preventable.
Open your mattress within 30 days of receipt. A mattress left compressed for more than 30 days may sustain structural damage and void the warranty.
For heavier sleepers or couples, prioritize diligent rotation and confirm that your foundation meets the support requirements, particularly the center-leg requirement for Queen sizes and larger.
