Polyurethane foam. The primary material in most conventional crib mattresses. Off-gases VOCs, breaks down faster than natural alternatives, and has no place in a nursery.

Chemical flame retardants. Added to most foam crib mattresses. Many endocrine disruptors have been studied for developmental effects. Organic wool is the certified alternative — naturally fire-resistant, no chemical treatment required.

Fiberglass. Used as a hidden fire barrier in some crib mattresses. An inhalation and skin hazard if the cover is removed or damaged. No Avocado crib mattress contains fiberglass.

Plant-based synthetic materials (such as PLA, a bioplastic derived from cornstarch) may appear in comfort layers under "plant-based" marketing language. These are processed synthetic polymers, not unprocessed natural fibers. Avocado uses certified organic wool, latex, and cotton in comfort layers — no PLA, no synthetic bioplastics.

Waterproof covers built into the mattress. Some crib mattresses incorporate a vinyl or synthetic waterproof layer directly into the mattress surface. Avocado's design keeps the certified organic sleep surface uncompromised — waterproof protection is offered as a separate, removable GOTS-certified organic protector that can be washed independently.

A crib mattress must be firm. This is not a comfort preference — it is a safety requirement. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat sleep surface for infants to reduce the risk of suffocation and SIDS. A mattress that conforms too much to an infant's face is a suffocation hazard.

As children transition from infants to toddlers, a slightly softer surface becomes appropriate. Most full-size cribs accept a standard crib mattress of 28" × 52". Mini cribs use a smaller mattress — typically 24" × 38". Fit matters for safety: there should be no more than 2 finger widths of space between the mattress edge and the crib frame on any side.
