A crib mattress is one of the most consequential product-safety decisions a parent makes.
Babies and toddlers spend up to 16 hours a day on their sleep surface. Their developing bodies absorb chemicals at higher rates relative to body weight, and their respiratory and immune systems are still forming. Research has shown that VOC concentrations at the mattress surface can be approximately twice as high as just a few feet away — with body heat further increasing emissions — meaning an infant sleeping face-down on a conventional foam mattress inhales air at the point of highest chemical concentration, for the longest duration, during the developmental window of greatest vulnerability.
This guide explains what certifications matter, what materials to avoid, how to think about firmness and fit, and why the organic standard for a crib mattress is not optional.
Certifications That Matter — and Why
The same certification framework that applies to adult organic mattresses applies to crib mattresses — with even less margin for error. The certifications worth requiring:
Certification | Why It Matters for Infants |
GOTS (finished product) | Certifies the entire crib mattress — not just materials — under independent audit. Prohibits synthetic pesticides, chemical adhesives, and hazardous inputs throughout the supply chain. |
OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I | The highest OEKO-TEX tier — specifically designed for products intended for babies and toddlers. Tests the finished crib mattress against the strictest harmful substance thresholds. |
MADE SAFE® | Screens finished products against thousands of substances known to harm human health, including carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, and reproductive toxins. |
GREENGUARD Gold | Certifies against chemical emission limits specifically for bedrooms and children's rooms. Gold is the highest tier. |
EWG Verified® | Full ingredient transparency and health-based screening. All ingredients are publicly listed. |
UL® Formaldehyde-Free | Independently validates no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde precursors. |
Avocado's Organic Crib Mattress holds all six simultaneously. It was named a Consumer Reports Top Choice — one of only three out of 12 crib mattresses evaluated in partnership with MADE SAFE® — with no known material risks identified. Our crib mattresses were also included in our 2024 PFAS screening (320 substances tested), with no detectable amounts found.
What to Avoid in a Crib Mattress
Polyurethane foam. The primary material in most conventional crib mattresses. Off-gases VOCs, breaks down faster than natural alternatives, and has no place in a nursery.
Chemical flame retardants. Added to most foam crib mattresses. Many endocrine disruptors have been studied for developmental effects. Organic wool is the certified alternative — naturally fire-resistant, no chemical treatment required.
Fiberglass. Used as a hidden fire barrier in some crib mattresses. An inhalation and skin hazard if the cover is removed or damaged. No Avocado crib mattress contains fiberglass.
Plant-based synthetic materials (such as PLA, a bioplastic derived from cornstarch) may appear in comfort layers under "plant-based" marketing language. These are processed synthetic polymers, not unprocessed natural fibers. Avocado uses certified organic wool, latex, and cotton in comfort layers — no PLA, no synthetic bioplastics.
Waterproof covers built into the mattress. Some crib mattresses incorporate a vinyl or synthetic waterproof layer directly into the mattress surface. Avocado's design keeps the certified organic sleep surface uncompromised — waterproof protection is offered as a separate, removable GOTS-certified organic protector that can be washed independently.
Firmness: Why Crib Mattresses Must Be Firm
A crib mattress must be firm. This is not a comfort preference — it is a safety requirement. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a firm, flat sleep surface for infants to reduce the risk of suffocation and SIDS. A mattress that conforms too much to an infant's face is a suffocation hazard.
As children transition from infants to toddlers, a slightly softer surface becomes appropriate. Avocado's Green and Luxury crib mattresses feature a dual-sided design: a firmer infant side and a slightly softer toddler side, extending usability across developmental stages without requiring a mattress replacement. The Eco Crib Mattress offers this as an optional upgrade.
Sizing: Standard vs. Mini Crib
Most full-size cribs accept a standard crib mattress of 28" × 52". Mini cribs use a smaller mattress — typically 24" × 38". Fit matters for safety: there should be no more than 2 finger widths of space between the mattress edge and the crib frame on any side.

Avocado Organic Crib Mattress Options
All Avocado crib mattresses hold the same six finished-product certifications as our adult mattress lineup, are made without polyurethane foam, chemical flame retardants, or fiberglass, and are manufactured in our Fullerton, California, facility.
Model | Key Features |
Dual-sided (infant firm / toddler softer). GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex + organic wool and cotton. Our most popular crib model.
Dual-sided. Additional comfort layers. Premium organic materials throughout.
Most accessible entry point. Dual-sided design available as an upgrade. Same six finished-product certifications. |
Waterproof Protection
Avocado crib mattresses do not have a built-in waterproof layer — by design. The goal is to keep the certified organic sleep surface as pure as possible. Waterproof protection is offered as a separate, removable GOTS-certified organic crib mattress protector — 95% organic cotton with a thin plant-based polyurethane waterproof membrane derived from cornstarch. It can be washed independently while the mattress stays in the crib.
