The right firmness depends primarily on how you sleep. Sleep position determines where your body needs pressure relief and where it needs support — and getting that balance wrong is the most common reason a mattress feels uncomfortable within the first few weeks.

Start With Sleep Position

Side sleepers need a surface that cushions the hip and shoulder — the widest points of the body — while keeping the spine aligned. Too firm, and pressure concentrates at those contact points. Too soft, and the spine curves out of alignment. Side sleepers generally do best on Plush or Ultra Plush.

Back sleepers need even support across the full length of the spine, with enough give at the lumbar curve to prevent lower back strain. Medium is the most common choice for back sleepers; those who prefer a firmer feel or sleep warm often do well on Firm.

Stomach sleepers need a firmer surface to prevent the hips from sinking and the spine from arching forward. Firm or Extra Firm is typically the right range.

Combination sleepers who shift positions through the night benefit from a surface that responds quickly to movement. Natural latex — the primary material in every Avocado organic mattress (except our Wool mattress) — adjusts faster than memory foam, making it well-suited to combination sleepers across the firmness range. Medium is the most versatile starting point.


Body Weight as a Secondary Factor

Firmness is also relative to body weight. A surface that feels medium to one person may feel firmer to a lighter sleeper and softer to a heavier one.

  • Under 130 lbs: Consider moving one step softer than the position recommendation above — a surface that reads as Medium for most people may feel Firm.

  • 130–230 lbs: The position recommendations above are a reliable guide.

  • Over 230 lbs: Consider moving one step firmer — a Plush surface may compress more than expected, and Medium may provide the feel a lighter sleeper would associate with Plush. Extra Firm and Firm are worth considering for stomach and back sleepers in this range.

Medium is our most popular option across the Avocado mattress lineup. It works well for back, combination, and side sleepers who prefer a supportive feel over deep contouring.

What if I'm between firmnesses?

If you're a side sleeper who also spends time on your back, Medium is the most versatile choice

What if my partner and I prefer different levels of firmness?

A split king — which is two Twin-XL mattresses — configuration lets each side of the bed be a different firmness, so each person can choose the option that matches their sleep position and preference independently. Each side measures 38" x 80" and can be paired with a split king adjustable base for additional customization. If a split king isn't the right fit, Medium is the most versatile single-firmness option for couples with different preferences. Split King adjustable bases are also available.

Can I try it before committing?

Yes. Every Avocado mattress includes a sleep trial of up to 365 nights. Firmness preferences can take a few weeks to settle — your body adjusts to a new sleep surface, and initial impressions don't always reflect how a mattress will feel at 30 or 60 days.
