Fit Guide: Which Avocado Mattress Is Best for Kids?

Eco Kids (Twin/TwinXL/Full, 7.5", bunk/trundle) for ages 3–12. Eco Organic (Twin XL, Medium) for budget-conscious teens. Green Mattress for a full range of firmness and the longest warranty. Add a waterproof protector, or a Kids Bed or City Bed Frame.

Choosing a mattress for a child involves three decisions; most guides collapse into one: size, mattress, and setup. Getting the size wrong means replacing the mattress sooner than expected. Getting the mattress wrong means compromising on the certification standards that matter most when a developing body spends 10 or more hours a night on a sleep surface. This guide covers all three.

Step 1: Choose the Right Size

Size is determined by the child's age, how long the mattress needs to last, and the bed setup.

Size

Dimensions

Best For

Twin

38" × 75"

Ages 3–12; bunk beds; trundle beds; standard kids' rooms

Full

54" × 75"

Older kids and teens who want more room, a longer investment horizon

Twin XL

38" × 80"

Tall teens (5'6"+); college dorm prep; longer investment horizon

A note on Twin XL: The Eco Organic Kids Mattress is available in Twin and Full only. Twin XL requires the Avocado Green Mattress — the full adult lineup with all firmness options and the complete finished-product certification stack. For a teenager who is already tall or heading toward college, a Twin XL in a Green Mattress is often the more practical long-term investment.

Thinking about longevity: A Twin mattress works well for most children through middle school. If you're buying for a child who will outgrow it in a few years — and you'd rather not replace it — a Full gives more growing room without the footprint of a queen. Twin XL is the college standard and suits tall sleepers whose feet would hang off a standard Twin.

Step 2: Choose the Right Mattress

Eco Organic Kids Mattress — purpose-built for kids

Available in: Twin, Full

Profile: 7.5 inches — low enough for bunk beds and trundle beds

Firmness: Medium (one option; appropriate for children's developing spines) Warranty: 10 years | Trial: 100 nights

The Eco Organic Kids Mattress is Avocado's purpose-built kids' mattress. Its 7.5-inch low profile is specifically designed for bunk beds and trundle setups where clearance matters. Medium firmness is appropriate for children — pediatric guidance favors firmer surfaces for developing spines, and this mattress provides comforting support without the excessive softness that can compromise posture during growth.

Certifications: GOTS organic finished-product (CU863637) | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I | EWG Verified® | MADE SAFE® | GREENGUARD Gold | UL® Formaldehyde-Free | Good Housekeeping Seal

No chemical flame retardants, fiberglass, or polyurethane foams. GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, organic wool and cotton, up to 704 individually encased recycled steel coils. Made in our Fullerton, CA facility, with domestic and imported materials.

Eco Organic Mattress — for teens needing a Twin XL at a lower price point

Available in: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Profile: Standard adult profile

Firmness: Medium (one option)

Warranty: 10 years | Trial: 100 nights

The Eco Organic Mattress is Avocado's most affordable adult GOTS-certified mattress, carries the full finished-product certification stack, and comes in Medium — the right firmness for most teens.

The right choice when:

  • Medium firmness works (no need for Plush, Firm, etc.)

  • The mattress will go to a college dorm or into adulthood

Certifications: GOTS organic finished-product (CU863637) | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I | EWG Verified® | MADE SAFE® | GREENGUARD Gold | UL® Formaldehyde-Free | Good Housekeeping Seal | Good Housekeeping Bedding Award Winner 2026

Avocado Green Mattress — for teens and longer investment horizons

Available in: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, California King

Firmness: Extra Firm, Firm, Medium, Plush, Ultra Plush

Warranty: up to 25 years | Trial: 365 nights

The Avocado Green Mattress is the right choice when:

  • A specific firmness beyond Medium is needed

  • The mattress needs to last through the teen years and into adulthood

  • The longest trial (365 nights) and warranty (up to 25 years) matter

  • The budget allows for the longer-term investment

For teens, Medium is the most versatile firmness. For younger children on a Green Mattress, Firm is appropriate — children generally need more support than adults.

Step 3: Choose the Right Bed Frame

Available in Twin and Full | Optional Twin trundle | Zero-VOC white or natural beechwood | Made in our Los Angeles woodshop

The purpose-built kids' option. Solid hardwood construction, zero-VOC finishes, and an optional trundle for sleepovers or a second sleep surface. Designed to pair with the Eco Organic Kids Mattress. Available in Twin and Full only — does not accommodate Twin XL.

Available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King | Solid wood platform design

The right choice for older kids and teens who need a Twin XL or are transitioning to a more grown-up bedroom aesthetic. Works with the Green Mattress across all sizes. A practical buy-once option for a teenager who will use the bed through college or into adulthood.

Using an Existing Bunk or Trundle Frame

If the child's mattress will sit on a bunk or trundle not purchased from Avocado, confirm that the slats are no more than 3.25 inches apart. The Eco Kids Mattress's 7-inch profile is specifically designed for bunk and trundle clearance. A bunkie board — a thin, solid support platform — can replace a slatted foundation on some bunk frames where slat spacing is too wide.

Step 4: Add a Waterproof Protector

For children — particularly those under 8 — a waterproof mattress protector is not optional. The Avocado Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is:

  • GOTS certified organic — 95% organic cotton with a thin plant-based waterproof membrane derived from cornstarch

  • GREENGUARD Gold certified | MADE SAFE® certified | UL® Formaldehyde-Free | Good Housekeeping Seal | Good Housekeep Best Bedding Awards 2026 Winner

  • Machine washable | Quiet (no plastic crinkle) | Fitted design

  • Backed by a 1-year warranty (Good Housekeeping adds a 2-year limited warranty)

Keep two in rotation — one on the mattress, one in the wash. Wash before first use; the organic cotton will shrink to fit after a few washes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Eco Kids Mattress firm enough for a child?

Yes. Medium firmness is appropriate for children's developing spines — pediatric guidance consistently recommends against overly soft sleep surfaces, which can compromise posture and spinal alignment. The Eco Kids Mattress provides comforting support with enough give to be comfortable without the excess softness that can affect posture during growth.

Can the Eco Kids Mattress be used on a bunk or trundle bed?

Yes — the 7.5-inch low profile is specifically designed for this. Confirm the existing frame has a slat spacing of 3.25 inches or less. A bunkie board can help if the frame requires additional support.

At what age should a child move from a Twin to a larger size?

There's no set age. A Twin works well through middle school for most children. If the child is already tall or likely to outgrow a Twin before they leave home, a Full or Twin XL from the start avoids the need for a replacement purchase. Twin XL is the standard college dorm size and suits any sleeper over 5'6".

Should I get the Eco Kids Mattress or the Green Mattress for my teenager?

The choice comes down to how long the mattress needs to last and the budget. The Green Mattress carries a longer trial (365 nights vs. 30) and warranty (up to 25 years vs. 10), offers five firmness options, and holds OEKO-TEX® Class I — the highest classification, designed for products used by babies and toddlers. For a teenager who will use the mattress for five or more years, the Green Mattress is the longer-term investment.

Do I need a waterproof protector?

For children under 8, yes — accidents happen, and an unprotected mattress can develop permanent staining and odor. Even for older children, a protector extends the mattress's lifespan and is easy to wash. The Avocado Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is GOTS certified and made without plastic or chemical treatments.
