It's the most common thing we hear from new Avocado customers, and it's almost always said in the first week. Here's what we want you to know: you're not alone, and nothing is wrong with your mattress.
Quick Answer:
Sheets that are too tight can make the mattress feel firmer than it is — check those first
A topper can dramatically change the feel
We carry natural, organic toppers for both softness and added support
If the feel isn't quite right yet, that's completely normal — and we can help.
First, check that your sheets aren't too tight, as this can make a mattress feel firmer than it actually is. A mattress topper can add softness and pressure relief. Whether you're looking for more softness or more support, we have a natural, organic option for you.
First: make sure your mattress isn't upside down.
Before anything else — check this. Avocado mattresses have a top and a bottom and should never be flipped. The Avocado logo at the head or foot of the mattress should be right side up. If it isn't, flip it. (Yours is upside down.) You'll feel the difference immediately. It happens more often than you'd think.
This is what a natural latex mattress feels like.
Avocado mattresses are available across multiple comfort levels — from Extra Firm to Ultra Plush — so you can choose the feel that is right for you. But regardless of which comfort level you selected, a natural latex mattress feels fundamentally different from synthetic foam. It pushes back rather than sinking. It responds to your body rather than conforming around it. If you're transitioning from memory foam or a worn-out mattress, that responsiveness can initially read as firmness — even on a Plush. That's not the mattress being wrong. That's natural latex doing what it does.
The break-in period is real.
The wool and cotton layers in your mattress will soften and compress naturally over the first 30 to 60 days of regular use. The mattress you're sleeping on tonight is not the same mattress you'll be sleeping on in six weeks. This is the most important thing to understand about an organic mattress. It's also why we require a 30-day minimum before accepting returns — not to make returning harder, but because most customers who wait are glad they did!
Check your sheets.
This sounds small, but it matters. Sheets that are too tight — either because they're a size too small or because the fitted sheet is pulled too snug — can make any mattress feel firmer than it is. If your sheets feel taut across the surface, try a looser fit or switch to a deeper pocket. Our organic sheet collection includes deep-pocket options specifically designed for thicker mattresses — made with natural fibers that breathe and drape well without pulling tight across the surface.
If it still feels too firm after 60 days, a topper can help.
A mattress topper is the most effective way to adjust the feel of your mattress without replacing it. Our Eco Organic Mattress Topper comes in 2-inch and 3-inch thicknesses, and in two latex options: GOLS-certified organic Dunlop, which adds comfort for back and stomach sleepers, and Pure Talalay®, which is softer and more contouring — ideal for side sleepers or anyone with hip and shoulder pressure. The 3-inch is our most popular choice for customers looking for a meaningful change in feel. No polyurethane, no memory foam, no synthetic materials. Just natural latex doing what it does best.
A note for lightweight side sleepers.
If you're a side sleeper under around 130 pounds, the firmness may take longer to resolve — and in some cases, a topper or a softer comfort level may be the better long-term answer. If you're still struggling at the 60-day mark, reach out to our Customer Experience team before your trial ends. We'd rather help you find the right fit than have you wait too long.
What about too soft?
Less common in the first weeks, but it can happen — particularly for stomach sleepers or those who need firmer support. If the mattress feels like it's not pushing back enough, first check your foundation. Some popular bed frames — including many from IKEA and other flat-pack retailers — use slats that are intentionally bowed or flexible. That flex is designed to add softness, but it works against an Avocado mattress. If your base bends under weight, your mattress will too. We cover foundation requirements in detail in the next tip.
The ideal feel is real, and we want you to find it. Most customers get there naturally, just by giving their bodies the time they need to adjust. Stay with it.
