Your Avocado mattress is only as good as what's underneath it. This is true of any high-quality mattress, but it's especially true of one built with natural latex, wool, and an innerspring system designed to deliver precise, zoned support. If that system doesn't have a solid, stable platform beneath it, it cannot do its job — and the mattress will perform worse than it should, sometimes significantly so.
This is not just a performance issue either. Both your warranty and your sleep trial require proper foundation support. A mattress used on an inadequate base is not eligible for a warranty claim and may not be eligible for return. Getting this right protects your investment from day one.
Quick Answer:
Quick Diagnostic — check your setup before moving on:
We handcraft our mattresses with layers of organic latex, wool, and cotton, plus individually wrapped coils — which means they're heavy and need a strong platform to perform correctly. For frames with slats, each slat should be no more than 5 inches apart and wide enough to create a platform that doesn't flex. In some cases, we suggest a fifth center leg for extra support underneath the middle of the bed. If you need a new frame, we have several styles built specifically for Avocado mattresses. |
What counts as proper support?
For Queen, King, and California King sizes, your base must have five to six leg supports, including at least one center support leg. For Twin and Full sizes, four leg supports are required. If you have a slatted frame, the slats must be no more than five inches apart, and each slat must be at least two and a half inches wide. The surface must be rigid and non-yielding — it should not flex or bow under weight.
Box springs are not compatible.
A traditional box spring contains springs that can compress over time, creating an uneven, yielding surface that works against the support your Avocado mattress is designed to provide. Not sure if you have a box spring? If your base has a fabric-covered frame with visible or internal springs and gives slightly when you press on it, it's a box spring. A foundation, by contrast, is a solid or slatted rigid platform with no springs — it doesn't flex. If you're unsure, press your hand firmly into the surface. If it gives, it's a box spring. Box springs may void both your warranty and your sleep trial. If you're using one, replace it with a foundation, a foundation with legs, a bunkie board, a sturdy bed frame, or an adjustable base.
Your mattress cannot be placed directly on the floor.
Without airflow beneath it, moisture from body heat, sweat, and room humidity accumulates between the mattress and the surface below. That trapped moisture creates ideal conditions for mold and mildew — particularly on the underside of the mattress where you can't easily see it. Floors also concentrate dust, pet dander, and the debris that dust mites feed on, all of which transfer directly into the mattress over time. Mold is not covered under our warranty, and unlike a stain, it cannot simply be cleaned away. Prevention is the only solution — and proper airflow is how you prevent it.
Watch out for flexible slat systems.
Some popular bed frames — including many from IKEA and other flat-pack retailers — use slats that are intentionally bowed or flexible. That flex is designed to add softness to the sleep surface. On an Avocado mattress, it undermines the support that the innerspring system is built to deliver, making the mattress feel softer or less responsive than it should. If your slats bend under weight, your mattress is not being properly supported.
The simplest solution is an Avocado foundation.
Every foundation, foundation with legs, bunkie board, bed frame, and adjustable base sold by Avocado is specifically designed to meet the structural requirements of our warranty — no guesswork required. Our Organic Mattress Foundation is available in Standard and Heavy Duty, and in Low Profile (3.5 inches) or Standard height (7.25 inches), depending on your preference. The Heavy Duty version supports up to 2,000 pounds and is especially recommended for heavier sleepers or anyone who wants maximum confidence in their base. If you prefer a standalone option, our Foundation with Legs provides the same solid support without needing a separate frame. All Avocado foundations have slats spaced 3.25 inches apart — well within warranty requirements — and assemble in minutes without tools.
If you love your existing frame, a bunkie board may be the fix.
Our Bunkie Board sits atop your existing frame, creating a firm, stable platform — without adding significant height. It's the right solution if your frame's slats are too far apart, too flexible, or too few. Unlike most bunkie boards, ours is built with solid American-sourced wood and a slatted design covered in organic cotton, so airflow is maintained beneath your mattress. Our Low-Profile Foundation is another option, at just 3.5 inches tall, with a heavy-duty option that can support up to 2,000 pounds.
For solid platforms in humid environments.
If you're placing your mattress on a solid surface — a platform bed with no slats, for example — airflow beneath the mattress matters. Our Coconut Coir Mattress Pad sits between the mattress and the platform, allowing air to circulate and preventing the moisture buildup that can lead to mold. Made from coconut fiber and GOLS-certified organic latex, it's breathable, durable, and completely natural.
Get the foundation right, and your mattress will perform the way it was designed to. Get it wrong, and no mattress — no matter how well made — can compensate.
