Back and neck pain are among the most common reasons people buy a new mattress. And if you're still experiencing discomfort during your first few weeks with an Avocado organic mattress, it's easy to assume the mattress is the cause. In most cases, it isn't.
Quick Answer:
Back pain affects 80% of us and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Our mattresses are rated medium-firm — the level doctors recommend for back pain relief — with individually-wrapped coils for hip, back, and shoulder support.
Still experiencing aches and pains? Even the best mattress needs a good pillow to work correctly for your body. The right pillow supports your head, neck, and upper back, keeping your spine aligned throughout the night. Some discomfort in the first weeks is normal.
If you've been sleeping on a mattress that was too soft, too worn, or poorly supportive, your body has likely adapted to that position over months or years. Your muscles, your posture, and your sense of what "comfortable" feels like have all adjusted to an imperfect sleep surface. When you switch to a properly supportive mattress, your body has to readjust — and that process can involve some temporary achiness, particularly in the lower back, hips, or shoulders. This is your posture correcting itself. It typically resolves within two to four weeks.
Your mattress is designed for spinal alignment.
Avocado mattresses are engineered to support spinal alignment — with natural latex that contours to your body without collapsing under it, and support systems designed to keep your spine in a neutral position throughout the night. Depending on your model, this may include ergonomic zones targeting the hips, lower back, and shoulders, or a reinforced perimeter for consistent edge-to-edge support. This is the foundation of good sleep posture. But the mattress is only part of the equation.
The missing piece is almost always the pillow.
A mattress can align your spine from the shoulders down. It cannot align your neck. That's the pillow's job — and it's a job most pillows do poorly. If your pillow is too flat, your head drops, and your neck bends downward. If it's too lofty, your head is pushed forward and your upper spine curves. Either way, the misalignment travels down, and you wake up with pain that feels like a mattress problem but is actually a pillow problem.
If your pillow is more than two or three years old, it has almost certainly lost its ability to provide proper support. It's time to replace it. We have a wide selection of pillows.
The right pillow depends on how you sleep.
Side sleepers need a higher loft to fill the space between their shoulder and their head. Back sleepers need a medium loft that supports the natural curve of the neck without pushing it forward. Stomach sleepers need very little loft — and ideally should aim to sleep on their side or back, which places far less strain on the spine.
Our pillow collection is designed to work with our mattresses and with the full range of sleep positions. The Avocado Green Pillow is fully adjustable — it arrives generously filled, and you can add or remove fill using the built-in zipper until the loft is exactly right for your body and sleep position. This adjustability makes it the most versatile option we offer, and the right starting point for most people. The Molded Latex Pillow provides a consistent, structured shape with firm, responsive support — ideal for side and back sleepers who want a fixed loft and a more defined feel. Both are made with certified organic materials and are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Class I certified — the highest safety classification available, tested safe for even the most chemically sensitive individuals.
Check your foundation, too.
A base that flexes or sags undermines the zoned support your mattress is designed to deliver. If your foundation isn't firm and flat, your spine isn't getting the support the mattress was built to provide. If you haven't already reviewed Tip 3, it's worth going back.
Pain that persists beyond the first few weeks or is severe should always be discussed with a physician. A mattress can support good sleep posture — it cannot address underlying medical conditions.
Get the pillow right, and you may be surprised how much of the problem resolves on its own.
