Your Avocado mattress just arrived — and if it may feel a little different than you expected tonight, that's completely normal. Most customers go through a short adjustment period before experiencing the full comfort and support. You're not doing anything wrong, and neither is your mattress.

This guide will help you understand what you're feeling, what to check, and how to get the most out of your new sleep system.

Your Avocado mattress is here! Before you do anything else, read our unboxing guide for step-by-step setup instructions. Then come back here — because the first night on a new Avocado mattress can feel a little surprising, and we want you to know that everything you're experiencing is completely normal.

Open it right away.

If your mattress arrived compressed and rolled, unbox it and set it up as soon as possible. Your warranty requires the mattress to be opened within 30 days of delivery. Don't leave it in the box. Note that some models — including the Extra Firm, Luxury Organic, and Grand Luxe — ship flat in a freight box rather than compressed, and do not require expansion time.

Give it time to expand.

Once the inner vacuum seal is cut, your mattress will begin expanding immediately. Most customers can sleep on it within about 30 minutes. Full expansion typically takes 3 to 5 hours. The corners may be the last areas to fully open up — this is expected, because we don't use polyurethane foam. Gently lifting each corner and giving the mattress a light shake can help it settle. Any wrinkles in the cover will smooth out naturally over the first few days.

You may notice a natural scent.

If there's a mild aroma when you first open your mattress, that's a good thing. You're smelling organic latex and natural wool — two of the real, honest materials inside your mattress. This is not off-gassing. Off-gassing is what synthetic foam may do when it releases chemicals into the air. Our organic mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold certified and independently tested for VOC emissions. What you're smelling is simply nature, and it will fade on its own — usually within a few days, though for some sleepers it may linger up to a week or two. Fresh air helps — open a window if you'd like. Read more about emissions.

You may notice small cotton flecks.

Small flecks of cotton shell husk may be visible inside the cover. This is not dirt, and it is not mold. It is a natural characteristic of organic cotton. Nothing to worry about.

It may feel firmer than you expected.

If you've ever slept on memory foam or a traditional spring mattress, an Avocado organic mattress will feel different — more responsive, more supportive, possibly more firm. That's intentional. Natural latex responds to your body heat and weight differently from foam. It pushes back rather than sinking. Many customers find this takes a little getting used to, especially in the first week or two. This is normal, and it's actually a sign that your spine is being properly supported. Give it time. Tip 2 covers this in detail.

It may feel different from how it did in the showroom.

Showroom mattresses have been gently used, broken in, and conditioned by hundreds of visitors. Your mattress is brand new. The wool and cotton layers haven't compressed yet. The latex hasn't had time to respond to your specific body weight and sleep position. What you're experiencing is a new mattress — not a wrong one.

Keep the law tag attached.

Your mattress has a law tag attached. Leave it exactly where it is, unaltered, for the life of your mattress. Your bedding will cover it. Photographic evidence of the law tag in its original state is required for any warranty claim.

Register your mattress if you purchased it from a retail partner.

If you bought your Avocado mattress from an authorized retail partner rather than directly from Avocado, please register your product to activate your warranty. Keep your original proof of purchase as well.

Put your protector on before your first night.

This is important. Your sleep trial allows you to return your mattress if it's genuinely not right for you — but only if it's in a condition suitable for donation. That means no stains, no soiling, no damage. A single spill without a protector can end your trial eligibility before you've even had a chance to decide. Put your protector on tonight, before you sleep on it.

Our Organic Mattress Pad Protector is our preferred option — no synthetic materials, no barrier to breathability, just GOTS-certified organic cotton keeping your mattress clean. If you have kids, pets, or anyone who needs liquid protection, our Organic Waterproof Mattress Protector is designed to be thin, quiet, and breathable — nothing like a traditional plastic cover.

Store it flat, not on its side.

If you ever need to store your mattress for an extended duration — during a move or renovation, for example — always store it flat, never on its side. Because our mattresses are needle-tufted by hand rather than glued, the internal layers can shift if the mattress is left standing upright for an extended period. Flat storage protects the integrity of the construction.

Your trial starts now — and it varies by model.

We ask every customer to sleep on their Avocado mattress for at least 30 days before deciding whether they like it. Sleep trials vary by model — from 100 days for the Eco Organic and Eco Organic Kids mattresses, to a full year for the Green, Vegan, Wool, Luxury, and Grand Luxe lines. Check your confirmation email or our return policy for the exact terms for your mattress. Whatever your trial length, the 30-day minimum is genuine advice — your body needs that time to adjust.

You made a great choice! The next tips will walk you through everything you need to know to get the most out of it.
