What goes under your mattress affects how it performs, how long it lasts, and how high off the floor you sleep.
Avocado offers a range of foundations, bed frames, adjustable bases, and furniture collections — each designed differently and suited to different setups. This guide explains what's available and how to choose.
Do You Need a Foundation?
Every Avocado mattress requires a supportive, flat base. A mattress on the floor will restrict airflow and void the warranty. A sagging or uneven base — including a worn box spring or broken slats — will accelerate the breakdown of the comfort layer, regardless of mattress quality.
Some Avocado mattresses include a note on the law label that they are "intended to be used without a foundation," meaning the mattress itself provides full support and does not require an additional foundation layer on top of a platform frame or adjustable base. This does not mean they can be used on the floor.
Avocado Foundations
Avocado's wood foundations provide a solid, flat base that elevates the mattress off the floor and contributes to total bed height. They are built with solid hardwood and are compatible with all Avocado mattresses.
Foundations are available in standard height and low-profile height — the right choice depends on your total bed height preference and whether you're using a bed frame. A standard foundation combined with a taller mattress will produce a higher sleeping surface; a low-profile foundation keeps the total height more manageable.
Avocado Bed Frames
Avocado's solid hardwood bed frames are built in our Los Angeles woodshop using North American hardwoods — walnut, oak, alder, and pine — with traditional dovetail joinery and hand-rubbed natural oil-and-wax finishes. They are designed for longevity and repairability, not disposability.
Frames are available in configurations with or without legs, and at standard and low heights, which affect the total bed height when combined with your mattress. Frames without legs sit closer to the floor; frames with legs provide more under-bed clearance and a higher sleeping surface.
The City Bed is manufactured at our Tecate facility under the same Avocado-operated standards as our Fullerton operation.
Avocado also offers a Zero Waste furniture collection crafted exclusively from hardwood offcuts generated during manufacturing — turning scrap into finished pieces rather than sending it to landfill. See the full bed frame collection.
Adjustable Bases
Adjustable bases allow the head and foot of the mattress to be raised and lowered independently — useful for reading, watching TV, reducing snoring, or managing back pain and acid reflux. Avocado's adjustable bases are compatible with all Avocado hybrid and latex mattresses.
Adjustable bases are available in two configurations:
Standalone. The base sits on the floor without a bed frame, serving as both the bed's support structure and its visual base. This is the simpler setup and works well when you don't want or need a frame.
Frame-compatible. Some Avocado bed frames are designed to work with an adjustable base — the base sits inside the frame, combining the adjustable function with the aesthetic of a traditional bed frame. Not all frames are compatible; check the product page or contact us to confirm.
Using Your Existing Base
Avocado mattresses are compatible with most platform frames, slatted bases, and adjustable bases, provided the support is firm, flat, and continuous. Slat spacing should be no more than 3" apart to provide adequate support across the mattress surface.
Traditional box springs — which contain springs rather than a solid base — are not recommended for Avocado mattresses, as their flex can reduce the mattress's support and may void the warranty. A solid or slatted platform is the correct replacement.
Choosing the Right Total Bed Height
Total bed height is mattress height plus base height. Most people find a sleeping surface of 25" – 30" comfortable for getting in and out of bed. Use this as a guide:
Setup | Approximate Total Height |
Mattress on platform frame (no legs / low) | Mattress height + ~4"–6" |
Mattress on platform frame (standard legs) | Mattress height + ~9"–12" |
Mattress on low-profile foundation | Mattress height + ~4"–5" |
Mattress on standard foundation | Mattress height + ~8"–9" |
Mattress on adjustable base (standalone) | Mattress height + ~12"–14" |
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to buy an Avocado foundation with an Avocado mattress?
No. Avocado mattresses are compatible with any firm, flat, well-supported base — including most platform frames. An Avocado foundation is recommended for best results and warranty coverage, but it is not required if your existing base meets the support requirements.
Can I use an adjustable base with any Avocado mattress?
Adjustable bases are compatible with all Avocado hybrid and latex mattresses. They are not recommended for all-foam mattresses (Avocado does not make foam mattresses) or for very rigid mattress constructions. Contact us if you have questions about a specific model.
What is the difference between a foundation and a bunkie board?
A foundation is a full-height support structure that elevates the mattress and contributes to total bed height. A bunkie board is a thin, low-profile board (typically 1"–2") used inside a bed frame to provide a flat surface for the mattress, without adding significant height.
