A coil is only as good as how it is made. During manufacturing, every Avocado coil is formed, heat-tempered, and stress-relieved to resist softening and sagging over years of use. Because Avocado designs and builds its own coil units at its Tecate facility rather than buying them from a supplier, the temper, gauge, and height of each coil are controlled in-house.

Each coil is also individually encased in its own fabric pocket, so it moves and bears load independently. Unlike a connected coil grid, where stress concentrates and travels across the unit, individually encased coils distribute the load coil by coil, reducing the uneven wear that leads to body impressions.

Steel coil units are generally not the component that determines when a hybrid mattress reaches end of life. In a hybrid construction, the comfort layers above the coils are what typically degrade first. That is one of the reasons Avocado builds its comfort layers from organic latex and wool rather than polyurethane foam, which develops compression set under sustained cyclic loading.

Independent durability testing by Leggett & Platt's International Technical Center, using ASTM-certified methods, found that the standard Avocado Green Mattress lost approximately 1% of its height after 100,000 Rollator cycles, equivalent to 10 years of use. Total accumulated compression under repeated 230-pound body pressure measured 0.80 inches, well within the 1.75-inch benchmark for high-performing mattresses. Because the head and foot zones of the zoned coil unit are identical, the mattress is designed to be rotated head-to-foot regularly. Rotating spreads use evenly across the comfort zones so the surface wears uniformly rather than developing a dip where you sleep most.
