Most articles on this topic quote a single figure. The figures in circulation measure different things, which is why they disagree.
Replacement interval is how often people actually buy a new mattress. The Better Sleep Council reports that consumers expect about 9.4 years, down from 10.9 years in 2007, with actual reported replacement at roughly 9 years. That number includes every mattress replaced after a move, a change in household, or simply the feeling that it was time. It measures behavior, not materials.
Age at disposal is how old mattresses are when they leave the home. The Mattress Recycling Council's 2023 Mattress Age Study reports an average of 13.9 years across all units, and 13.2 years for innerspring and all-foam constructions.
Service life is the physical question: when does the product stop delivering its intended function under normal use. This is determined by material degradation and established through testing. It is the only one of the three that is actually about the mattress.
How Long a Mattress Lasts, by Construction
What a mattress is made of determines how it fails, and how it fails determines when it needs replacing.

Most published mattress lifespan figures are industry-consensus values rather than peer-reviewed findings, and it is worth being clear about which is which.
Well established: the degradation mechanisms. Compression set, cyclic fatigue behavior in polyurethane foam, and the role of vulcanization in natural rubber resilience are documented in materials-science literature. ASTM D3574 is the standard test method that measures them.
Less established: the specific year figures. The commonly cited service-life ranges appear consistently across trade publications, manufacturer technical content, and retailer educational material, but they are consensus values rather than empirical findings from primary sources. Any article that presents them as settled science is overstating the evidence, including where those figures favor materials we use.
What we can point to directly: independent durability testing by Leggett & Platt's International Technical Center, using ASTM-certified methods, found that the standard Avocado Green Mattress lost approximately 1% of its height after 100,000 Rollator cycles, equivalent to 10 years of use. Total accumulated compression under repeated 230-pound body pressure measured 0.80 inches, against a 1.75-inch benchmark for high-performing mattresses. Full test results.

Why the Warranty Does Not Answer This Question
A warranty term and a service life measure categorically different things. A warranty is a contractual commitment to remedy specific, defined failure modes under defined exclusions, and its length reflects commercial and risk considerations as well as material performance. Service life is a physical question about material degradation.
The two diverge in both directions. A mattress can sit well inside its warranty period and already perform poorly. It can also remain entirely functional years after coverage ends. A 25-year warranty is not a prediction of 25 years of use, and a 10-year warranty is not a prediction of failure at 10.

What Actually Changes the Answer
Two identical mattresses can reach end of life years apart. The variables that matter most:
Support underneath. This is the largest avoidable factor. Slats spaced too widely concentrate stress on the coils above the gaps. A frame without adequate center support sags under load, and no amount of rotation corrects for a sagging foundation. Inadequate support is the most common cause of premature wear and the most common reason warranty claims are denied.
Rotation. Rotating head to foot distributes compression across the full surface instead of concentrating it where you sleep. Most manufacturers specify a schedule, and most people do not follow it.
